German Salazar Barrel Break-In

Went to the "Riflemansjournal" archived site to find German's break-in regimen and discovered it has gone AWOL. If anyone has a downloaded copy can you upload it? Thanks in advance.

He wrote an article titled Equipment: Barrel Break-In

It was a gag, meaning the page was mostly blank and the bottom line said, "and that's all there is to it"

Here is another quote from an article called Breaking In the Bat that is shown at the bottom of his Break In article.

It has been a while since we have lost him, so if he wrote a different one give me some pointers and I may have it? German was a personal friend, and as I recall, he didn't believe in barrel break-in, he just started shooting at 300 to 600 and got a barrel started. Remember, he was a sling shooter so with less sensitivity than an F-Class and in those days it was a PIA to set up a chrono on the line. By the time he shot 1000, the load was worked out at 300 and 600.

Oh, I've shot with German and remember his wit. He's getting a laugh from beyond right now.

I use to do the various procedures. Then I had a barrel that after 2 days was still a copper queen in 3 shots. I got mad and shot 30 shots without cleaning. Had a slight bit of copper that time and that was the end of the copper, it was a very good barrel. That was the end for me, I just start load work up from shot 1. Current 6BRA with 1100 rounds gave be the first tiny bit of light blue after leaving Sweets in overnight since it was new. No procedures the last half dozen barrels.

I believe this subject has been debated to the point of nauseum, with strong advocates on both sides of the issue.

I never did it probably because when I started precision shooting in the Jurassic era, I had never heard of it. Like most herd animals, I probably would have been talked into it like so many other nonsensical things I fell for such as neck sizing, aggressive copper removal, the inadequacy of the 243 Win for deer, etc.

I won't try to convince anyone that the "so called" barrel break procedure is nonsensical because it I don't think is harms the barrel to go through that tedious process and it probably makes those who do this feel better. Feeling better has value. However, I never had a quality rifle / load system fail to meet my standards over a long period of time without doing this.

About all I do is run a bronze brush through several times followed by an alcohol patch. There’s a good bit of crud in new barrels, but when the patches come out clean, that’s it.
