Gerber vs. Buck

My wife won this lil Buck knife. yes, she beat me that day. Anyway, Midway put this Gerber "Freeman" on sale last week. I had to buy it. Side By side. no contest. To me the Buck Knife has a much better hand feel. Both are out of the box sharp & well made. For under 25 Dollars these are both really decently made in USA knifes. mike in ctKnife pic (2).jpg

Mike back when I was on the F.D. I would disagree with you, I had and used both a buck folder and a Gerber folder (at different times) and the Buck just did not hold up had to constantly sharpen, the Gerber just kept an edge longer. Had the same problem with my hunting knives, used to carry 2 Bucks in my backpack but only 1 Gerber did the job.
Only thing that almost never needed sharpening was my Puma, nothing I could afford even compared to the Puma.
I still have them all stuffed in a drawer.

I hear ya. Back when I was a working man I had a mini Gerber para folder. it never let me down held a good edge. The few Buck knifes I played with were always [easy to sharpen] Ying vs. yang there. I almost hate to tell you, my hunting knife to this day is a 1950's early 60's example of an old Western L-66 fixed blade. I traded one of my Boy scout buddies a crappy switchblade for it. I treasureL 66.jpg it to this day.

I have had good luck with both Gerber and Buck knives over the years. One of my go to knives is a Buck Vanguard. I have had it since my teenage years and It has served me well.

I had a Buck knife. Edge dulled fairly quickly.
I now carry a Kershaw while hunting, and skinning duty.

Butchering i use a Victorinox 5" deboning knife.
It also goes in the knife block for cooking prep of meat.

My kitchen knives are Henkel.

The Kershaw, Victorinox, Henkel's have only needed steeling thus far. They haven't been sharpened.

C3219BE5-8FD1-4221-A269-D241230A96DF.jpegNice blade, here’s mine. I used Buck folding knifes for hunting, till my Dad passed away. This was his hunting knife as a kid (early 60’s). I re-discovered it going through his things. The metal was in pretty rough shape and the stacked (waffer?) handle was failing apart. It cleaned up pretty decent and it’s cleaned all my deer for the past decade.

I'm with you Bill. Some of that 1950's , 60's early 70's stuff is top quality. The materials, the process & quality control Made In USA. it could not be beat. After that, time period, I found some Japan Steel & even Tiawan superior to made in Germany or USA goods. mike in ct

They are both still quality affordable brands, I have some Gerbers and Bucks that's more than a couple years old and the quality has gone down some over the last 10 or so years on their standard range but they are still very good knives that wont break the bank. I have been hunting with the same Gerber Gator (if I remember the name correctly) for the last must be 15 years and that knife looks and operates like the day I got it.

Gerbers newer top end range think they refer to them as the custom range is moving things back in the right direction for them even the quality/fit and finish on the standard range has been better over the last couple of years, the orange once with the BG initials on was a total waste of time unless you needed a knife in your tackle box that you could just forget about until you needed to throw something with it

I am still hunting with the Buck 110 that my parents gave me as a present about 30 years ago. I have taken good care of it and it is still in great shape. The blade is pretty hard and difficult to sharpen but holds an edge well.

For a pocket knife, I prefer Case XX. When I was a kid, my Grandfather always carried a Craftsman "Large Stockman" model that he bought from Sears decades ago. When I got big enough, I bought myself the same knife as his and carried it for years. One day he told me that he had nearly worn out his Craftsman and wanted to replace it. I went out and bought a pair of Case XX Large Stockmans with Rosewood grips and gave one of them to him. We both retired our Craftsman knives at the same time and put them away. He and I both carried those Case XX's for many years. The day he died, I put mine away and started carrying a Case XX Trapper. When we divided his things, I made sure to get my Grandfather's old Craftsman and Case XX. Maybe I will get a display case so I can keep both his and my old knives together. I miss that old man.

I have way more gerbers than bucks.

I did just bought my son a buck 55 because it's like the one his grandfather carried every day. He gave it to my son just before he passed earlier this year, and my son asked me for a knife like the one papa gave him.

Other wise, I've found the same as above. The bucks don't hold an edge for very long, but my gerbers stay sharp for ever

I carry a Gerber sheath knife, but when a animal hits the ground i get out my forschner knives.
They are made by Victorinox and are used by most of the taxidermists out there.
