Genius or BS Artiste...

Rich, I'm not familiar with Verne Johnson other than through the older HBR match reports...he was a serious competitor, though..that much is clear. I'm actually pretty 'young' by BR standards. Steve Kostanich is a legendary BR rifle builder and competitor...lots of great minds up there in your neck of the woods.

Here's a picture of Larry Cribbs I took at this years NBRSA Hunter Nationals: center is Stan Ware to the left is past NBRSA Hunter National Champion Roland Potter, white shirt). Three Amigos, to be sure.

Eagan molds.

Donald Eagan died last year.I have about 10 of his molds and I cherish them.i have two of the .22 cherries he made, one is 45 and the other 55,estimated)I may have Bernie Rowels of Old West cut me two molds with them next spring,he said he would do it.I will give you a heads up when he has them.I have a .22 design drawn up I am going to send to David Mos.He has made some match winning molds for other CBA shooters and are $125 deliveed for his lathe cut blocks.

I only use lino in the 22's,it casts well and is cheap considering how little you use.

I can send some Eagan 22 samples,62 and 55 grain down with Marlee on sunday to LaGrande if you want.I also have an LBT tapered design I had made up if you would like to take a "look-see".It has shot as well as the Eagan at times.

Harryone now has a shooter shooting 0.222 at 200 yards at 2700 fps.If I cut that distance in half I get 0.111 and still get 2700 fps.

222 remington is the caliber.Sorry about the confusion.

He also told me he is on the board of directors at the range and has arranged for monthly shoots there. He then told me that George will be shooting Marlee's own 30BR bench gun not Georges 03 Springfield that was grouping 5/8th inch with a 6 power scope.

This whole thing is getting mixed up!!

I was telling Marlee and the guys at the gunclub meeting that an 03 with a 6X scope in CBA Modifed Class has a small group record of arround 5/8" It was an example of how well one could do with ideal conditions and a little luck.I dont own an '03 that shoots that well, but my issue sight Springfield has shot planbase cast as well as 1" at 100 yards.
Marlee did tell me he was shooting a 6mm at 3000 fps into 1/4" groups with cast.Rich told me he made the mold, then Marlee told me he had the mold made??? We all are not on the same page.

I hope Marlee brings his cast load to the match.I will probably shoot my Savage 22-250 with lead at the Sat match,Its only good for 5/8" on the good days, with cast) at best, but seldom over 1".Its not about my ability, its about how well a non-gas cheked mollied cast bullet can shoot out of his guns at HV.I made a challenge and I may be proved wrong,If I am I will admit it. I hope he has the time to build me one like his to compete with. The guy has class for sure to call me up and invite me to a match and talk about his shooting experiments.I cant say I would do the same if some guy posted I was full of it on a forum.
I think IDAHOSHARPSHOOTER is stirring it up a little more than it needed to be.But i started it i guess<G>

gently stirring the pot is an excellent way to get people to respond. It was also the ONLY way to find Marlee. It's also a way to find somewhat the measure of a man by his friends who will stand for him. No slight was intended as I said earlier; and the end result is my getting to meet him and motivate me to make the trip to LaGrande to "talk shop" about his idea. It would seem to have tremendous merit.

Agreed.

I called a local gunsmith / bullet maker to buy some 138g 30's for the sat match.First jacketed bullets i have bought in two years, wow they got expensive. He heard about me being an A**hole to Marlee at teh meeting.I am a local anti-hero.Marlee put it to him as he and I having a "pissing match" that is already blown over.If we would have had time to talk that night i think all would have been different.

I shot the BR club match this Saturday with Marlee and his crowd. I shot my heavy barrel Savage 99 in 30-30 built by Cloward. Had fun, but the gun is just sub MOA in accuracy with my cast loads so competitive I was not. I shot 30-35-41-39-42.The first two targets I could not get an accurate center of my grouping!!! After target #2 I ran a patch through the bore and found a build up of lube about 4” in front of the chamber. After this the gun started to shoot better even though the wind was beating me up with my 1500FPS 185 g cast bullets. Marlee showed me his cast bullets and a couple of small groups. He shot his 30BR with BIB”s for this match. He is in the early stages of his development with cast and is going a different direction than most of us "traditional” lead shooters. Some of the things he is doing have been done, others have not. The consistency of grouping is what he is fighting with at the moment, and is expected with the velocity he is trying to get with a cast load. If it can be done he sure seems like the guy who could do it. He is going to bring out his lead loads and a chronograph and let me shoot and record what he is doing. This guy is super sharp and a very honest person. I am going to shoot a 30BR cast gun with these guys next match.

Thanks for the update. Sounds like you had fun and got your wheels turning. That's what BR is about...always pushing things a bit further and trying new things.

Marlee needs to show up to one of our matches with our top shooters. He mentioned we haven’t gotten any better groups than Pope and the boys did in the 1920's.Those groups were generally NOT shot in matches, only on selected calm days. We still don’t shoot as small groups as you guys. Its not uncommon for top guys to agg. in the high 3's for four 5 shot groups at 100 yds.,in good cond)A few groups in the 2's are not totally unobtainable in matches. Our record small group in HVY is .154" and the 4 group agg is .278".My 30 BR wont do this well, but is a bit under .5 MOA.I think there is not a real understanding of how well the top boys do in the CBA.Many of our CBA shooters are experimenters and not competitors so our "serious" group is a lot smaller than yours,my opinion only)We still are looking for better things and I think hi-vel may be the final frontier.I think this "blending" between disciplines may do all some good and i am glad it got started.
