General thoughts on free float-1.25 barrel

Well, it arrived. A f class atlas with a 28 inch 1.25 barrel. Boy this sucker is a chunk of steel! I'm actually building the stock. I got to thinking about bedding. If this was a varmit or sporter I'd bed normally plus 2 inches of barrel depending on barrel contour and not loose any sleep.

Thinking of the same with this one but also wondered about the extra weight I have on action

So I guess a poll, what's general thoughts regarding bedding the heavies!

Thanks, plan is hopefully to get it together with enough time for barrel break in and fire forming. All day to day up here but have until about end of November.

I have a 30" X 1.25 barrel on my f-class 0pen rifle. it will hold 1" or less elevation at 600 yrds. 100% free floated
I don't see a problem.

If you bed the first 2 inches, it is not free floating.

I don't know that there is one, singular, right, answer. If you bed the first two inches of the barrel and you are not happy with the rifle's performance, you can always get your Dremel out and change that in a jiffy.

I fully float all my barrels no matter what diameter they are, from my XP-100's with 1.250's and my BAT L's with 1.450's, and my BAT M's with 1.350's...
Never noticed it to be a problem.....

I have totally free floated in the past, but had a feather weigh and a 3 countour shoot noticeably better with barrel somewhat supported, so that's where I start on sporters

That said, given course of fire, I'll start with a full free float on this one and go from there

Thanks.

Howdy !

My 28" .224" cal SS Palma taper K & P kept giving me unwanted " verticle ", when hanging off the front of my WIchita WBR1375; in a LEE SIX
Hunter/bench stock.

When I rechambered / re-barrelled to a new 6mm wildcat, I also re-stocked the barrelled action. I decided to float the action, and go w/ a barrel clamp set-up. The new barrel is a 29" Broughton SS Palma taper, and has a fairly-long straight chamber area of 1.250" diam at the rear.

I use a 36" aluminun " I-beam " oriented as an "H". The barrel is set into the open upper valley of th "H", and clamped in-place using 2ea
doubled-up plumbing repair clamp plates, 4ea carriage bolts, 2ea double-up lower torque plates ( co-opted from "U"-Bolts ),; and 4ea jam Nuts.

I cut slots in the correct locations, to accept the recoil lug and trigger assy. The inner/upper side rails are relieved slightly, to provide floating clearance for the action. The Rt upper side of the beam was given a slight relief filing; to ensure bolt handle clearance.

I use flat sections of composite deck board for the fore end, and buttstock pieces. A small, removable strip of deck board rounded " edge "; is utilized as a removable cheek rest ( to allow access to breech for cleaning ).

I started-out w/ the " barrel clamp " butt-up against the recoil lug, and moved it fwd in increments as I did range testing.
At-length, I " tuned out " verticle I was seeing; which went away once the clamp assy was positioned 1/2" fwd of the recoil lug.

Upon firing, recoil feels to me , to be more straight rearward; which I like... compared to the previous more-traditional stocks I had been using.

For my shooting/ my uses/ my needs, I doubt that I'll return to use of a traditional rifle stock design, unless it's required for something like
" factory class" ; et al

Sounds pretty cool
Would ya post some pics?

I know of no top smith that builds both Benchrest and hunting rifles that would bed any of the barrel other than a featherweight which usually gets bedded in the fore-end. As long as the barrel threading is done properly and provides a tight lock-up to the receiver, bedding under the barrel here can only cause problems.

OK. I'm having some challenges in getting the pics sent as attachments; using " fast image resizer " on my computer.

I'll try to the pics in smaller groups, and see if they make it through ?

I think you need to re-finish it - maybe some linseed oil to bring out the grain.
