General Question on Rules

This is a broad question I know, but some explanation is welcome.

I saw at a benchrest match where shooters fire their designated number of rounds in the prescribed time period (say 10 shots), but what if one round goes into the same hole as a previous bullet? How is group and score calculated if that happens? And how would you know it did happen, since there is no evidence of the putting a bullet through the same hole? It appears that in F class, the process is to mark each shot and recover the hole with a sticker, so no problem there. But I do wonder how scoring is done since the first hole would be covered by the sticker, precluding any measurement at a later time, unless the sticker can be peeled off to reveal the target underneath. ???

At our club in 1000 yard Benchrest we have one guy watch the bank and count and another plots the shots. usually they figure it out in the pits before the targets are pulled. Matt

In short range BR, there are moving backers behind the targets to verify all the shots were fired. They are collected and replaced with each target.

Never understood why IBS 1Kyd doesn't use backers. A paper towel roll ought to be cheap enough.

Never seen 42" wide paper towels, where do you get them at?
(IBS-1000 target is 42" square)

At a 600 yd. match if the scorer can't make a decision he has the 3 referees check the target to check for a double hit. The will check for one hole to be a little out of shape either on the front or back of the target. One hole may be a little darker. You also use a good magnifying glass. The refs will usually be able to pick out the double hit. Ron

I still don't see how in something like short range BR, how you can pinpoint where all the holes are, given the tiny group sizes. - Phil

Tony Boyer's book has a description of the moving backer system for short range benchrest. With some fast shooting it is possible to have 2 bullets in 1 hole even in the backer, but that's very rare.

The moving backer is in constant motion once the command to fire is given. Even if the shooter gets off two shots within seconds of each other, the amount of deflection in the movement of the backer will show as two shots. Even if they are overlapping, it is readily visible that it is two shots. As stated previously, the backer targets are collected after each relay and brought to the scorer(s) to verify that five shots were put into the record target.

The backer moves fast enough if the bullets are going through the same hole in the target, but of course it is possible for a shot to go through the same hole in the backer (making the group bigger on the target). Tony describes this happening to him in a tournament. I agree that nearly all circumstances it would be possible to recognize a two-bullet hole in the backer, which is why the system is used.

Like Matt said one person watches while another plots the order they hit the paper.. You can tell if they hit in the same area on the bank or not..
