Anyone shoot a gain twist? Pro's and con's. Will a 8.75-8.3 stabilize a 105 or 107 VLD in 6BR? Any info would be great!!
Thanks
Scott

i was talking with a fella one day last week and this very topic came up. The fella i was talking with is no stranger to long range benchrest. he knows a fella that shoots a lot of 600 yard matches in St Louis i think. Anyway this fella has shot the krieger gain twist barrels a lot. He claims that the Krieger gain twist 8.7-8.3 shoot really well in the summer time but not so good in the cooler weather. I think he mentioned anything below 45 degrees they dont shoot the 105 and 107's very well. Again this is hear say, and not my experience. i have no reason to doubt what my friend was told though either. I have one but i havent shot it in the cooler weather. It was around 75 degrees when i last shot that barrel and it shot really well. Mine is chambered for the dasher so there will be a little more speed involved. Maybe the 6br doesnt push the 105's fast enough for this barrel in the cold weather? I dont know? I will have to do some testing for my self. again fellas this is what i was told, not my experience. I am curious to know if anyone else has any personal experience with the krieger gain twist and colder weather. I havent had many opportunities to shoot here lately so i havent gotten to shoot mine in this weather yet. Anyone have anything to share? Thanks Lee

Hi Scott,

Why a gain twist in 6BR?

I've been contemplating playing with a few of these, mostly to find compatibility issues, decreasing projectile damage due to aggresive twists required by several wildcats, barrel life, etc.

Nonetheless, I am afraid to find myself presently somewhat pesimist in thinking that any additional quantifiable accuracy can be obtained for some calibers (ie: 6BR-105/108 gr), by going gain twist, specially if shooting under 600 yds.

Most bystanders would stay with a good 1/8" barrel, and spend time behind the trigger.

Now, on the other hand, if what you want to try is pushing a 6mm Berger 115 VLD at over 3,300 fps accurately, and without vanishing issues, that is an argument well worth it's salt and accountability.

Any takers ?

Andy.
