Gain from barrel set back??

Ive read on different forums that one should buy a longer barrel, then sett it back when almost shot out.

Im just wondering how much can one gain from say a 280 Rem shooting 3000 rounds, then setting it back 2-3'.. 1000 rounds? 2-3000? Any information regarding this?

I do not have too much luck setting them back. Yes, they will shoot a little better than before the set-back, however, don't expect to win with it. Still great for groundhogs and the such...or hunting rifle.

It just appears that many shoots down the tube eventually take it's toll on the bore. You will see fire cracking past the new chamber 2-3 inches....a great place for copper to quickly adhere to and cause flyer's. Experiment with it yourself if so inclined, else circular file it!

Some years ago, I had a Hart 6ppc barrel with 1200 rounds set back. My gunsmith scoped it and found very little fire cracking, thus he was willing to do it. Like Nat says, most wait too long. The down side is that you will not get another full life, i.e. 1200 rounds from it; probably about half that.
