G7 or leica 1600 B????

I know nothing about the G7 but Leica has always held a very good reputation regardless of the model. To me the leica is the Gold standard to which all rangefinders are compared to. Im not saying the G7 is not a very good product cause i know nothing about it but I would not hesitate to purchase another leica any day. And leicas do hold a very good resale value. Even thier 800 yard model is selling better than some companies (claimed) 1200-1600 yard models

If money is not an issue 't get a Vectronix Terrapain. It will blow the others out of the water. Finer aim point and usually will range over 2000 yards. Matt

Depends on what your using it for. I have both and prefer the G7 for hunting or plinking steel or targets at long range. Tells you how many minutes to dial up when you range something with out having to read a drop chart. The Leica don't range as good but compact size is nice. Your paying the extra money on the G7 for the built in ballistic features. That is the main reason I use it most. Will really put it to the test for long range gopher shooting this spring.

What can u consistently range steel out to on the sunniest day? Deer sized game on sunniest day?

With the Terrapin I can usually range deer to 3000 yards. I can pipoint smaller targets then the Leica;Swarovski; and Newcon. This holds true even on flat terrain. Matt

I have a 24 x 29 inch steel plate that's 1640 yds from my bench that the G7 will range consistently. Ranged antelope @ 1300 (so far). It works better in the sun than Leica. If your shooting more than those distances a lot than the Terrapin beats them all. The G7 is a better hunting range finder giving you your MOA instantly when you push the button. Way more convenient than getting bullet drop off say a I-phone. It only gives MOA to 1400 yds. which is plenty for hunting purpose.

Thats where custom turrets come into play. No counting MOA while dialing, or using a ballistics calculator. Just range your distance, dial the turret to the marked yardage, hold for wind if need be, and shoot.

My Leica 1600 has all that ballistic drop chart jiberish, but I never use it. I just like it because I can pick up pinetrees on a hillside at 1600+ on sunny days and well over 2000 yards when its overcast. Plus i can put it in my front shirt pocket and still have room in the same pocket for a pen and a Snickers bar ;D

Not that you need to spend much on a custom turret. Some write in the rain paper, and dope written on a thin strip of that paper, then taped to the turret will take you a long way. Easy to change as needed and a cheap way to go if you are still working on loads or playing with bullets.
I vote Leica.

This subject has me scratching my head as well. I just had a used Leica 1600 that wasn't doing well, so I sent it back to Leica and they sent me a brand new one... free.

So now I'm wondering if I should give it another chance, or sell it while it's still in the wrapper... and buy something better...... Hmmm....

I haven't had enough time with it yet . what I have done with it I'm well pleased . the G7 is more than just a rangefinder . it is a weather station . it gives ballistic solutions tailored to your specs , not generic crap that is based only on velocity . compensates for up hill or down hill shooting , all with a push of a button . I have no experience with the Leica range finders . here are two articles that have a lot of information that should answer some of your questions . hope this helps . Jim

The Leica also incorporates the outside temp and barometric pressure for calculstions in addition to distance, angle, bullet speed,etc...

Another feature I really like about the new Leica 1600 is the use of their new HD glass. The glass is so crystal clear and bright that it makes finding targets or animals in low light at long range a breeze.

Supposedly the newly designed Leica Geovid binos will give MOA calculations as well and they utilize a very powerful 2000 yard laser.

Terrapin and Kestrel 4500 with Applied Ballistics just about as good as it gets. Used to have a G7 , great rangefinder just not the best for ELR

I believe that Vectronix has discontinued the Terrapin so that should make the choice easier. Not trying to be a smart ass.

For varmint shooting, go by narrowest beam divergence. That's what makes the difference way out there with small targets on the ground. Years ago when I got a Leica 1200, it had by far the smallest beam divergence of anything.

I bought the 1600b 12 months ago and have only good things to say about it, reads out to and beyond its stated 1600m/yards consistently, compact and crystal clear glass, although having the ability to punch in your own ballistics and getting a precise MOA hold over as you do with the G7 is handy. If I had known about the G7 before id bought the Leica I would have went the G7.
