Fur friendly 223 (coyote)

50gr V-Max for many years now. As noted, if placement in forward 1/2 of body, very few exit.

Similar results with Nosler 70gr ballistic tip in .243 Winchester.

Having written this, I generally don't worry about fur condition. Not worth the time and effort to process.

I always go back to a phrase of mine from many years ago that still rings true, "I never found a coyote that made me any money."

I do not want to highjack this thread, but I do want to clarify...

While I stand by the above statements, they may have been interpreted not entirely as intended. I highly value each and every coyote I take. Every one is a test or testiment of the animal and my abilities. Each has a lesson to be learned. I just have to listen. Some lessons are more expensive than others.

I started back in the '90's trying to take all animals to the local furbuyer. As you all have seen, the market is a fickle fiend. The truth I found for me is I spent more time and gas money than I recouped, even when prices were good.

Does that make the taking of the animals worthless? Hardly so. Over the past years I have been hunting this area, there are now more red fox and even ground hogs making appearances. I also deer hunt (as I am sure many of you do). I look at removing as many coyotes possible as protecting another of my most favorite pastimes.

I coyote hunt, not for the economics, but for the personal challenges and the continued stewardship of God's creations.

Thanks to all.

I have a couple western palecoyote (hunting the Dakotas) that are over 20 years old, still look great, garment quality. From Moyles. I know a hunter that had a bed spread sewed from his tanned coyote. Hats look great also, very warm.
Not every coyote has the fur quality to be utilized, some years I toss the majority. It's also risky to handle mangy/sick looking coyote, wash your hands after handling. US military uses coyote fur on winter hoods(doesn't frost up).
I want people to see, handle quality, natural fur garment options.

The key to bringing the fur market back, is to get our chicks to like it.
(pretty much the same key for everything )

When Moyles tans the coyotes, do they leave them cased or split?
I've got three of em hanging in my spare room, that are at least five years old. They look and feel OK, and we're in a very arid cool climate. I'd hope they're good to go but-- I'd understand if they're not. jd
