Full diameter action mandrels

I
Alright @jackieschmidt, @jdscada, @tstevens09, @DiffEQ, @mikecockcroft, @RDA72927, @tobnpr, @tac284, @marazzi59, @jkohler, @Doug Beach who is on board for purchasing a set? Inform and tag anyone else that you know may be interested in getting a set as part of the group buy. @Alan Warner will grind them for us. 5 bars per set from .701-.703 dia. out of A-10 steel in 12” lengths. We have a tentative price of $775/set but we have to order at least 6 sets. A normal .500 mandrel and bushing set runs around $500+ and this is a far superior method of finding center of the action bore. Well worth the extra money in my mind. Like Alex said, it’s an investment you will never regret. Chime in and tag friends that may be interested. I will buy a set!
I would like to suggest waiting till Alex reviews his actual needed sizes before jumping in with 5 pc. set. Waste of time and money if they are not needed. I will adjust pricing accordingly.

Let me know where and who to send the Cashier's Check to..

I am on the fence, I will wait to see what the final count is on mandrels and cost. I have no doubt these tools would be exceptional and last a lifetime when treated correctly.

See comment #5 from tucker65 for a video example of what I’m measuring. It’s a test to see how straight the threads and face were cut in relation to the bolt bore raceway. The full diameter rods were interested in are a much better way to get this measurement.
Ok, I see.

that is exactly how I check an action. I made my own rod out of Stressproof.

As a machinist, I look at truing actions just like I do chambering barrels. You design a setup and procedure that allows you to machine critical areas to an already existing surface, in this case, the threads and action face to the existing bolt way.

Being aware of stacking tolerances really comes into play.

Another area which these will work great is being able to check all the 700 clones out there that share the 700 raceway dimensions. However, I would have a .7035" mandrel too. Mine has been used pretty well over the last decade. Better to have than not, you are already spending the coin

As you can tell, newbie question. But I'm assuming that this set is mainly Rem-700's, or will other actions use a different range of mandrels?
As eddie stated above it will work for most all 700 clones unless they are running oversized bore for bigger stuff like some from bat and maybe terminus and the like.

To all interested:
If you want a set of these there are a few conditions that need to be met in order to process this in a timely manor.
1. I need your contact info
2. I need your CC # for processing of a 50% deposit after I've got enough orders to make it a go-- 6 sets min.
3. You can add or subtract the number and size(s) of the mandrels you want.
4. I will not process cards till we have the min of 30 mandrels. --- I don't care if it goes to 40,50 or even 60.
5. All of the above needs to be DONE by 6/30 If its not, I will back out. We have work due that will not allow us to pile this on later than that.
6. I will announce on 7/1 to all who place orders if is a go or not.

Best way to contact us is either phone or Email.
Thanks
Alan Warner

All:
I've got stock on the way for the orders placed and deposits secured.
There are enough blanks in the lot coming to make up a set or two more if any of you are still interested.

Alan,
I would be interested in a set up to .7035 as mentions PM sent

Out of curiosity I called a local grinding shop today and asked for a rough quote on 4-5 1144 mandrels finish ground in .0005" increments. With me supplying the material.....labor, setup, etc. was $675 by itself. That's without any details on other dimensional tolerances.

What Mr. Warner is offering is a very fair price from someone with a sterling reputation. If I could at all justify the cost it would be worth it. Since I only work on maybe 2 receivers per year it doesn't make sense for me.

If you can justify the cost get them now, they're not going to get any cheaper in the future.
