FTR rifle recommendations

I started out with a Savage model 12 FTR, a good EGW 20 moa base and Vortex scope.
The rifle is built and designed for the purpose couldn't go wrong with the combo.
Now I have the FTR bug.
If I could do it again I would.
Later on you can switch the barrel out for a higher twist.
look in to them, heck if Team Savage is using them out of the box and winning with them, that alone should carry some weight

If you have more money than sense, the answer is easy. If you're on a tight budget, then the recommendation by memo43 for a bone stock Savage is good advice. If you're a DIY type, you can do what I did and buy a Savage Target Action and buy a barrel and screw it on yourself (you need a "go" gauge, an inexpensive specialty wrench, and a home-made barrel vise or you can borrow these items). Prefit barrels are in stock all the time at Northland. Then buy a stock and bed it yourself. Boyd's is hard to beat for the price.

Your scope choice is wide open and depends on your wallet and eyesight. I'm a half blind old fart so my scopes cost more than absolutely necessary. You could actually get buy with a rather inexpensive Muller if you don't want to spend a lot of money.

Hand loading is the way to go for any precision shooting, but you can start with factory ammo if you can find a combination that can reliably shoot 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. Accuracy is always nice, but until you can read the wind, 1/2 MOA is all you need for a while. The need for better accuracy will take a back seat to the ability to read that damned wind. I used to actually like wind when I was a sailor, now I hate it. ;)

Prepared to get hooked. F-Class is a lot of fun.

Joe,

Another vote for the Savage 12 F-T/R.

I started with one and it served me well for slightly over a year, and up to 600 yards with no additional MOA base. But I really got hooked in F-T/R, so then decided for a custom rifle, also .308, which takes me to 1000 yards, and I am doing well.

The Savage 12 F-T/R was great to get started, I complemented it with a Nightforce NXS 12-42x56, a Duplin bipod and a Karsten adjustable cheek piece, and the rest was up to me and my handloads. Eventually, you will likely get a different (better?) rifle, but one thing you can carry from your first rifle to the next is the scope, so get as good a scope as you can to start.

Good luck!

Also, another vote for the Mueller 8-32x44 side focus target dot model; I now own two. Perfect for my budget, and easily available thru Amazon.

One is on my 2001 28" Savage 10FP/L-W Long Range .260 rifle, and the other is on my Savage 11VT .223 used in FTR-like 250yd bench shoots.

I'm setting up a Savage F-T/R in .308 to get my feet wet. I bought it from another member here on the board, but I haven't shot it yet as I just got done bedding the stock yesterday. My initial impression is they are a great rifle to get started. There are many documented wins with Savages, so they will shoot, but won't win any beauty contests. If your budget allows for it, I'd go Savage with a Sightron or NF scope.
