Frozen Scope

Man Leupold had that kind of a set up about 50 years ago. My dad had 4 rifles with leupold adjusto mounts on them and leupold scopes that had no adjustments what so ever one them. All the adjustment was made using the bases. Couldn't you get leupold to do it now? If that many guys are doing that?

Not ever seen a Leupold as you describe it. Before 1970 several scopes were with external mounts. The ones I have seen are of the posa type system that uses a spring loaded plunger. The type of mount used now are are solid mounts with micrometer adjustments like the ones Bob Brackney makes. The most recognized external mounts today using the spring plunger system are the Unertls. I just sold a Unertl to get away from those mounts. Great scope, no need to mess with the insides, but not for BR with those mounts. Lee Six makes external mounts for a Unertl that lets one use the scope as a BR scope, solid adjustments.

Stephen,
Years ago when I was a kid I used to have a Leupold Pioneer 8x scope with a 1 inch tube that had no internal adjustments. I believe that it was made in the late 1950's. It used the Leupold Adjusto-Mount that had built in windage and elevation adjustments. IIRC, Leupold started manufacturing the Pioneer fixed reticle 2.5x scopes in the early 1950's and offered higher powered versions later in the decade.

I have seen one of the new style frozen scopes. The front ring was solid with a nylon bushing in it. The rear ring was adjustable with a beefy looking external adjustment. I would guess, from looking, that the total adjustment might be very limited. The adjustment turrets were missing all together.

The TSI adjustable mounts by Gene Buyks have a lot of adjustment. You are moving a solid bar and not putting pressure on the scopes. Actually the rings on his don't adjust.
