Front Sight Spirit Level Location (On Top vs Inside...or Other?)

I am a Corvette person through and through, but that particular Ford is just as goosbumpy (if that's a word!)

Kevin, We are kindred spirits. Just updating the 454 in my 1970 Corvette now. Had a friend in college had a GT 350 Shelby Mustang. Medium metallic blue. Cool car for a FORD!
Bob

Hi Bob:

One of my favorites, the big block 70's Vettes! (Side pipes were pretty much mandatory!). One of our lead engineers at the firm had a black one - it was a V8 symphony arriving or leaving the lot.

I have a 2019 ZR1 now, it will be my last (I can't see ever giving it up). My wife and I have had many though - starting with a C5 coupe. It has been amazing being a part of the fraternity of Corvette owners / family.

I wish you all the very best, spring is almost here!!!

Kevin,
ZR-1 wow. Talk about the top of the mountain, that certainly is it.

I pulled an LS-7 crate engine out of my 70. The L-88 clutch and the 12.5-1 compression had to go. My daughter wants the car n need to make it a bit more user friendly. Installing a Gen VI 454 HO that can use 93 Oct. gas so she can enjoy driving a BB 4 speed car. It’s a project.

Quick update - Haven't had chance to do much due to work and weather. But some preliminary impressions and results:

The Mo's level from CC arrived fairly quick. It only has threads on 1 side. My intent was to put it toward me. But my front sight iris also only has threads on 1-side too. So finagling ensues. I put it on front, facing the target in front of the lens, which luckily had threads on both ends. I used the o-ring that came with it as sort of stop when setting rotation. I got it to align with the crossbar, so they now both ge-haw on same plane.

Looks ok through sight. Not a distraction or crowded. Just a bit small. The bubble itself is wiggly.

Haven't shot a match with it yet. That will be the true test. But did shoot some at 50 yards at home on A-23. Light conditions were crappy, facing into the west as the sun set. This caused a lot of glare and distracting shine off the level. So bright that I had a hard time seeing the actual bubble in the yellow level liquid. My sun shade wouldn't fit on the Mo's level, so tape and paper tube had to suffice.

Results were positive with limited testing (50 rnds on 2 targets) after putting on ghetto shade. 200-13x and 199-13x. Groups were "rounder". The bubble help catch my excessive "lean" to left, beyond my normal cant angle. Getting it and the crossbar in agreement helped.

Looking at the alignment between the two may have helped me from excessive bull gazing...but just a theory.

A few days later I had a chance to test on SCATT. Just a couple of 20 strings, but results were good. Cleans both times with very high x-count (10.5 and up) on A-23. Groups were much tighter with no wide shots out side. Worst shot was a 10.3. So happy with that. All of my non-X shots were in the vertical, which I blame on pulse and such. Group size 16mm each time for 20 rnds. Very reassuring...I just need to shoot like this for real.

I made a new sunshade out of a thin wall plastic tube (1" ID that fits over the Mo's bubble). That should help and not look goober-fied.

I also acquired a exterior bubble from a member here. But haven't had a chance to test.

Work and rain gets in the way of so much. Heavy rain Sat, so SB prone metric is a washout...again.

Bubble Update #2:

Finally got to shoot the Mo's bubble (from CC) in actual match yesterday. Rain had passed but wind was whipping back and forth (disclaimer: I am not a wind shooter, or a very good shooter period).

The bubble was a definite help to brain/eye on keeping things level. It acted as a 2nd check point when in agreement with cross bar. However I probably spent way too much time sight looking and level worrying vs pay attention to wind flags. My scores suffered accordingly. But on the bright side, I mostly had much "better" waterline groups. Fewer wild shoots dropping out low left side due to unseen wonky cant. I figure sight alignment/level will go faster as I get used to it all...I hope.

Light condition went from dull and misty to full-on bright as day wore on. If its really bright and the sun is hitting bubble, the glare is super bad and distracting. However the DIY ghetto tube shade on front cuts down of glare. In current configuration, the shade is a must for me. I think it might be less of an issue if I could mount it toward me, but my iris lacks threads on that side. So this is my only mounting option for now.

Still haven't had a chance to test exterior bubble yet. Next on the agenda when meaningful time allows.
