Front Sight Spirit Level Location (On Top vs Inside...or Other?)

Question regarding spirit level placement for front sight - what is your preference/experience:

1) On top (seems to be standard offering from anschutz, gehman, etc).

2) Inside at bottom of front sight tube - Mo's and some others.

#2 would seem to be easiest to see, but concerned about crowding the sight picture. Got an iris, lens, hood and other stuff on it all ready.

Note 1: This will be for Anshutz SB prone rifle with a 22mm front sight. Trying to sort out my cant issues.
Note 2: Note to moderators - not sure if this post should go here or in competition. Please move as needed.

Thanks in advance

Tom

The 22 mm globe sights are 1 inch outside diameter. I put a 1 inch scope level on the rear of the globe sight and that served to also lock the adjustable aperature in position. I didn’t want anything on the inside of the globe to mar my concentric circle view. I also ran a .5 diopter on the front of the globe sight for an enlarged view of the black bull.

Thanks David, I have the same concern regarding the interference with the "circle-within-circle" sight picture. Rather avoid that if at all possible.
I did a quick search for 1" scope levels, all seem to be offset to one side vs center top. Can you recommend/share your solution? My google-fu search power failed.

Mine's on the top, but it's built into the tunnel. I have tried an inside-the-tunnel level but didn't like it. I think the threads were cut badly, and the inside of the level obstructed the tunnel.

It is mostly a personal preference if the level is on top or inside the tunnel. Personally, I prefer outside of the tunnel on top.

Dependingon your sight, most manufacturer's offer a level that is outside of the sight on a ring that is captured between the sight body and the threaded portion to hold the aperture.

Front Sight Spirit Level

I cannot see any reason to use a scope level vs one specifically made for a sight.

I’m sure that all of the referenced sights with levels are of great quality. I never liked the level on or in the front sight. Recently, I bought one that clamps onto the receiver. I put it on the forward part of the receiver for iron sights and can see it with no shooting left eye. I also clamped it on the scope rail up under the scope.

I like the tunnel unobstructed (I use a Centra 22mm tunnel too), so I use the Centra spirit level on top.

On sunny days (especially with a south facing range) you can get some glare from the level - I use a small piece of painters masking tape just to shield the top. It can be an issue though as stated in previous posts.

I also like a "floating" ring (no horizontal wires), the Centra glass fixed apertures are my favorites. The ring is also much thinner than any adjustable aperture - mine are 1mm in thickness.

If you use an eagle eye lens, Centra is making a new precision glass coated assembly that is amazingly clear. International rules allow up to a 1.5 lens, and it has really helped as I have gotten older. Just an FYI.

All the best to you,

kev

Shoot long Range and Cant the Rifle Different every time ? Then you will Know

Thanks all, I got the Mo’s 22mm. In stock and $19 smackaroos…about the price of a small cup of caffeine sludge and a stale bagel at a downtown hipster coffee shop. Hopefully, I will have time to play with it next week. Reports will follow.

Note: I normally shoot with a cant in prone. No matter what I do, I always seem to lean to my port side, even with SR. It’s seems to be the only way I can comfortably get everything lined up. My (old) anshutz doesn’t have any buttplate angle adjustment either. So that is out.
I do have a crossbar in front sight iris which helps. But I believe my eyes/mind don’t notice when it is slightly off, especially as the day wears on and I get fatigued. A few degrees off and shots can go wonky, especially on the metric target…it don’t take much with that booger.
But cant errors will show up just as bad on the conventional target too.
I usually don’t catch it until I have thrown a shot or two out to the low left…then the alarm bells ring. Position correction can then be made, but those 9’s are there and will not go away.
Back to the bubble…I figures a bubble would be hard to ignore. Even with a fatigued and fuddled brain. One more visible indicator that things ain’t right before slapping the trigger.

Kev,

Do you use the same size aperture for 50/50 and 100?

I’ve tried both types of levels and prefer the one inside of the tunnel for the following reasons. If shooting outdoors especially without a cover the spirit level can have a bright reflection that can be very difficult to shoot. Also having the spirit level one the outside of the sight tunnel makes you take your focus away from the aperture more so than having the level inside.
A spirit level would be a big help when shooting with a cant, just set up the bubble level at your desired cant and then your position is repeatable.

Thanks
David

Unfortunately it depends on the lighting conditions. If it's bright outside then inside the tunnel is best to avoid glare. If its dim, when not glare is possible, then it you may not be able to see the bubble well unless its outside the tunnel. You can't always win. I use a 30mm and that remediates some of dim light problems so I use one inside.

Kev,

Yes, typically - even though a slightly larger aperture (slightly larger line of white) produces better groups at 100.

I go back and forth between the Centra glass fixed apertures, and a Centra Swing adjustable. I love the sight picture with the floating thinner ring, but I love the ease of adjustment and simplicity of the Swing.

On a side note (and being a complete car geek).........67GT350 conjures up a very specific image in my head! LOL. I am a Corvette person through and through, but that particular Ford is just as goosbumpy (if that's a word!)

Kevin, We are kindred spirits. Just updating the 454 in my 1970 Corvette now. Had a friend in college had a GT 350 Shelby Mustang. Medium metallic blue. Cool car for a FORD!
