Front rest opinions

I have decided to step up to a quality front rest that I will be using in F-Class and Benchrest competition. I think I have narrowed it down to the Sinclair, the Targetshooting Model 1200, and the JJ-Industries. I can't seem to find any current information on the JJ rest, and am thinking it is now the Sinclair (please correct me if I am wrong). The Model 1200 looks like a great design, and is about the same price as the Sinclair.

Any thoughts or advise would be appreciated.

They are not the same.

I own the Sinclair rest. The low center of gravity is one of its better traits. The windage and elevation controls work well with one hand.

The only problem with the above mentioned rest for FClass is; 99% of FClass shooters do not have arms long enough to reach the adjustments when in the prone position. What I am saying is, you have to get out of your shooting position with your eyes not looking through the scope to make an adjustment. A big disadvantage if you are needing to get shots down range quick before a condition changes.

That is why I mentioned Bald Eagle. It has a wind-age adjustment at the rear of the rest. Check it out.

Awesome rest!! They have a few in stock ready to ship as well. The unique thing about the rest is the design allows movement side to side without pinching the rifle or putting unequal pressure on side of the forearm. Top notch quality work, and very fast, friendly service.

Thanks for the recommendation mikegaiz, I was looking at the Bald Eagle at Bruno's last week.
falconpilot> The Randolph just made the list!!!
butchlambert> Thats a very good point, and a good argument for a joy-stick type rest.

I appreciate everyones input. Excellent suggestions, and a good point to consider.

I have a Sinclair and it's a nice rest but for F-class I would recommend the Farley Co -Ax the joy stick lest you make adjustments without having to alter your body position. Talk to Mike Farley and order it with F -Class screws and feet as well as the large speed wheel. It is a thing of beauty. Farley Mfg.

Heh, I had that issue with my Seb rest using a PRT stock. I've got short arms in the first place and the PRT stock just exacerbates the issue. I had to make a 6" extension to the joystick so that I could reach it comfortably.

Ive been doing research for some time on this subject and trying to decide which rest to get for 1K BR. I weighed the options between the Sinclair and the Target Shooting model 1200. i ended up calling Wally at Target Shooting this morning and ordered the model 1200.

I like the model 1200 battery stop system with two bars and it has a wider footprint than the Sinclair both side to side and front to rear. Overall height of the 1200 can sit 1/2" lower than the Sinclair as well. Ordered the feet too which I thought would be nice for having the rubber orings to help dampen vibrations. The 1200 is 6 lbs lighter than the Sinclair, 24 lbs vs. 30 lbs, but I believe the lower center of gravity with a wider footprint should easily compensate for that.

Wally is one heck of a nice guy to talk to. Extremely helpful and more than willing to answer any questions you might have. I can tell he is one of those guys who is a real class act and will back his product 100%.

Even though the Target Shooting model 1200 may not be the best for F class, I can give you a review on it when it arrives if you like? Of course Wally does a pretty complete demonstration video on his website as well.

Take care and good luck.

I'm really glad to hear this BigDMT, I sent an email question to Target Shooting last night, and Wally called me back this morning, he says he doesn't like typing very much, LOL. I absolutely enjoyed talking with him today, very informative and a super nice guy. All of my questions were more than satisfied, and think that is the route I will be going too. He says he is about 2 to 3 weeks backordered on the 1200.

I would love to get your impressions when you get yours.

Yeah he is a heck of a guy. He was giving me stock tracking tips and all sorts of things. He really goes above and beyond when trying to give you every piece of information. Also said he likes to call people AFTER they receive the rest to walk them through it step by step for proper set up. Nice to talk to someone so dedicated to top notch customer service.

Besides how nice Wally is to deal with, I really can't find anything left to be desired in the model 1200. The quick detach top is a nice touch too. Really looks like a quality piece that gives you a LOT for your money at only $699. I ordered the optional feet for $49 and might get an additional top as well so I have one with a 3" bag for BR stocks and one with a "U" bag for sporter rifles.

Can't wait! :)

That's funny, we talked about helicopters (I'm a helicopter pilot if you couldn't guess from my forum name) for about 15 minutes. Did Wally tell you about using dryer sheets, made me laugh because it was so unexpected.

Yeah, the used dryer sheets is what I was referring to when we were talking about tracking :) He said it works really good even without having stock tape on the fore end. Can't hurt to give it a try.

Well BigDMT, I took the plunge today and ordered my 1200 from Wally. Really excited about getting this rest, I should have it before next months match!!!

Did Wally give you an ETA? I'm looking at 2-3 weeks.
