Front Rest for 7mm Rem Mag hunting rig

I’m working with a newly re-barreled 7 mm Remington Magnum hunting rifle. I currently have a Sinclair cast iron rest with the small sandbag on the bottom and the adjustable “pincher bags” on the side that move in and out to accommodate different sized forends. This is somewhat of a hard kicking rifle and when using the Sinclair rest, if I do not place a couple of fingers on the barrel to hold it down it will jump up like crazy during recoil and land back on the rest kind of hard.

Should I abandon this rest for the hard recoiling rifles and use something else for a front rest, or just continue holding the barrel down with fingers? Any suggestions appreciated.

I only use bipods for my hunting rifles. I kind of push into them and hold the stock. This works for me pretty well. One other thing to try is also use a sling. My 308 I use bipod and sling and I can hammer targets at close to long range and still see my hits.

Gilream,

Just do to physics, your gonna have to "grip" that rifle to control it. It just dont have the weight and balance of a BR rig. The key will be gripping in a way without inducing the wrong kind of stress, such as anglular stress (cheek) or side stress (hand) and then do it the same way each time.

I shoot my hunting rigs of my Bald Eagle rest too and it just takes a firm shoulder and a steady firm grip on the foream to control it.

Be caureful trying to free recoil a rifle like that, they will bite..... ;)
