Make sure your rifle is square to the front bag- eyeball if the fore-end tip is parallel to the Farley top.
For short range BR, the stock should only ride on the base of the ears, never the top of the bag. The ears should be fully formed, and the base filled up to the point of not bulging (hard to overfill an Edgewood though). I strongly recommend the ears -front and rear bag -be filled with Black Diamond blasting media (Tractor Supply Co) instead of sand. Sand is usually round and settles and packs too easily. The media has sharp irregular shapes and will not pack. Each outing exercise the ears, tap the stock into the bags and run back and forth a dozen or so times.
You may be allowing the rifle to recoil back too far -poor shoulder placement. There is a fine line to get free-recoil to work. Some can never master it.
My mistake. I thought you were talking black heavy sand.Jim- Black Heavy sand, and Blasting media are two very different animals.![]()
Very difficult to learn to be consistent-some shoot with tank tops to gain a more precise feel, some tape padding to the butt so it just touches the skin. I learned a lot from those pics before I started competition. If you look long enough through them, you'll likely find JimPag- he be the ugly one from Maine - a real maniacLooking at some of the photos in LHSmiths link, i may have my shoulder to far back from the stock.
Geez Lamar, I know I'm ugly but do you have to keep reminding everyone else. I'm still trying to figure out why Roy Hunter calls me pretty boy? Your wrong about me being from Maine, I'm a transplant from Mass. I'm not a Mainiac. These people up here call us Massholes or flatlanders. I can't say what I call them. But you ask any of them good ole' boys down south and they all know what I call them.Very difficult to learn to be consistent-some shoot with tank tops to gain a more precise feel, some tape padding to the butt so it just touches the skin. And the accent varies with the locale in Maine. For instance: Madawaska vs Lubec vs Portland.Different accent Lamar.

Tight to the point that it still can slide freely. The tricky part comes when you shoot next to someone on the next bench-too loose and the muzzle blast will ruin your POA.The stuff i use in my bags is called "Ilmenite blasting media". I will pack the ears with some more and try both methods of placing the stock only in the ears and riding the stitching. Regarding the front rest bag, how tight should the side adjustable(farley rest) wings be against the stock? I know they can't be to tight or the stock won't slide, but should i feel some resistance or should it be free and only enough to hold it straight?

Madawaska, now that's way up there. I have a friend from Mass who has a place up there just to go snowmobiling. I'm getting tired of living up here to tell you the truth. I sold 155 acres last week and I have 2 other properties to get rid of and I'm going to look down SC somewhere. I'm getting too old to put up with this snow and cold shit.Whats the matter Jim nothing to do up on that hill with all this snow falling?
By the way my mother who just turned 95 is from the Madawaska/Edmonston area, been in Ct. since 1939 still has the accent.
Its in there.
You wont see much. Rest and bag setup has been given too much importance in my opinion. Tracking is a function of having a stock thats straight, (meaning it doenst leave the x when you slide it back) how the stock hits your shoulder, and how you push it back up. I once used a rear bag with too much ear spacing, I twisted the bag to bind the butt stock between the ears, cross hair stayed on a clay bird at 1k. Straight stock is #1, hitting your shoulder square is #2.
