Front bag heavy or light sand

In anticipation of my new front rest, I ordered an Edgewood front bag.
It showed up this afternoon and I was wondering should it be filled with heavy sand or light sand ?

And how full should I make it?

I use beach sand , I fill the bag front and rear to hold the shape of the bag without any sag or swell.

I was told, many moons ago, fill the front bag with play sand and dont pack it(just kinda full, leave a little slack). and even though you didnt ask, in the rear bag fill the ears with play sand, pretty tight and the body of the rear bag with chromite, much as you can get in there. I have used this for years and had pretty good luck. ymmv and good luck, your gonna get a LOT of info, much of it contradictory so you better get your flame suit ready

also, just in case you didnt know(and aint no promise I know what im talking about) every now and then squish the sand around in the front bag, if it gets packed you will most likely get some vertical for no known reason

Too much sand or packed too tight can give you a slight amount of vertical.

I've always suspected a bit of bounce on recoil, and worse if the
rifle balance was off, being too heavy at the butt. I did a test using
a block of closed cell neoprene. Started at 1.5 inches thick, and
finished at 1/4" thick. The 1/4" gave the less in vertical. That being
said, I use that for testing ammo. For competition purposes, I may
be wrong but sand is the only allowable medium if not using a bipod.
Maybe search the rules, and design a hybrid bag.

Children's play sand with as much as I can possibly fit in. Works well.

John, I believe the SR Benchrest rules say sand only.

IMO, light, and just full, not tight.
