Frog hunting

GSPV

A failure to plan is a plan for failure.
A little father and son time last night. His GF went with us, too. He has a winner.

I like to serve them with hush puppies, fries and cole slaw. Lots of cool memories around frog hunting.

WOW!!!! Does that being back memories. The first job I ever had, more than fifty years ago, was selling frog legs to a local restaurant for .50 cents a pair.

My grandfather introduced me to frog hunting. He'd done it for the market during the depression. They had to,catch them wit heir hands. Their customers wouldn't buy them if they were gigged.

When I was a kid, we shot them with 22 short HPs. It's easier. Especially when the frogs, are jumpy.

I just like eating them , it doesn't get any better than eating fresh caught frogs. I might use crappie for a side dish ,lol

I've caught them every way you can think of, gig/shoot/hands/pray/ whatever.

One technique I would like to share with you guys is this:
Get a really long bamboo pole or one of the "Long" telescoping crappie poles. Put about 5-6 feet of mono on the end (all you will need). Tie a cheap fly/whatever imitation on the end. Slowly dangle that in front of the frog from distance (Long pole), if you don't scare him he will grab it every time! Swing him in, you know how to do the rest, LOL.

Immike has a great point with the crappie or big bluegills.

Lol, I love the stuff! Use a bright red jig for the frogs, they can't resist red.

My dad & I also would go in a small boat up along the shore
& shoot them with a 22 short hp. Sure do miss those days.

The power of suggestion worked on me,lol We ate frogs Friday night and I went to catch crappie today and caught a big one with a (white jig). I'll take him!! Lunch time !

Found a big one recently. Brought back memories of when I was a kid and we used to shoot them with 22s, everyone said that that was overkill. They never saw how big some of them bullfrogs were though. This is a two and half year old frog. They get bigger then this and are super tasty. Really tender white meat.

Hi Grimstod, man that is a nice sized frog, wish I had a a dozen of them to go along with the "Silver Queen" corn on the cob I'm having tonight, that would make an awesome combination.

How do you know it is a 2 1/2 year old frog, do you raise them or what?

When I was a kid (teenager) I worked on a aqua farm (most people say bait farm). We shot these things by the thousands. I myself when through 8 boxes of 500 count 22rimfire bullets when I was there. We shot them because they were pest. A bullfrog is top of the food chain in the pond. (except blue herons) so I got to know a lot about them. This one is a female. Just lade it eggs by the look of her stretched belly. She is missing here front right fingers. Looked like she got hit by a mower at one time. The fingers will grow back. Frogs are amazing at regeneration. A bullfrogs cells recover and repair almost 50 times faster then a humans! That almost wolverine speed. lol

It's easy to quit Immike, just say to yourself, self, I better send this batch of frog legs to Changeling! I'm worried I,m becoming a F addict and he needs these frog legs because of a very rare deficiency (lackolegs), you will be blessed forever in his household, Oh Yea :)

I'm trying to supplement my diet and wean myself back on crappie, well not just yet ,lol . Maybe later,ha . Ya know you can buy 5 lb cases of frogs at most butcher shops, I just picked up a box today to take to Camp Perry for a fry. About 25 sets individually wrapped in 5lbs.

Immike you didn't say what you paid for the 5 lb of legs, I really want to know how bad your addiction is. I wouldn't want to hear a friend was "Hopping " mad about the price and found in the local swamp down on all fours trying to call frog ;)
