freight damage to gun case

Matt Owens
I recently had my rifle shipped from a gunsmith and the hard case got busted by UPS. The contents were fine but now I am going to have replace this case. We all know they are not cheap. UPS says they will not pay since it was the shipment container. If it had been wrapped in cardboard they say they would pay for it.
Has anyone else experienced this and did you get them to replace it.

Thanks for any help.

Well I sent a gun to a gunsmith one time insured, in a gun case sealed in cardboard. The gunsmith didnt tell me till two mnths later that it had been practically destroyed during transit. He didnt realize it till he opened it up to start working on it and it was too late then. Loss of gun case and damage to the stock wasnt claimable. So i dont have anything positive to tell you.

Get this, they returned my case and THEY DID MORE DAMAGE TO IT! They now broke the carry handle off! The driver pointed it out when he dropped it off. I called UPS and have only gotten more run-around.
At least before I could have repaired it. It may not have been waterproof but now with the handle gone I consider it useless.
I will post updates.

One note though, put your gun case inside a cardboard box, or wrap in cardboard. I have issues with UPS anyway. I have a machine shop and a lot of the parts we ship are too critical to just put in a cardboard box so we will build a wooden box to ship in. UPS will charge you more just because it is wood. So we wrap in cardboard to avoid the extra charge.

Pretty sorry in my opinion. Build a box they can't destroy and they charge you more.

I didn't do it with my gun case since it is much harder to handle in a box but from now on you can bet I will.

All of the above are reasons I avoid shipping via UPS when possible. Much prefer FedEx. Years ago when I was heavily into pistol bullseye match competition I bought my 22 ammo (usually CCI std. velocity) by the case of 5000, and everytime UPS delivered it, at least one corner (sometimes two) of the case was badly smashed, the 100 count plastic boxes broken, and numerous cartridges bent and unusable. Enough damage that I would have 1 to 200 rds. destroyed, but not enough to pursue a claim. The local franchise UPS shops will not accept any firearms related shipping, sometimes with employees actually becoming hysterical the first time or two I attempted to legally ship a rifle back to the factory for repairs. The way they acted you would think I had a nuclear bomb in the box. On the other hand, my local Kinko's gladly accepts firearms related shipping for FedEx. To date, I have never had any damage when using FedEx, and as a bonus, they deliver on Saturdays, UPS does not. ;)

I had it happen once and it was packaged in cardboard box. They refused to pay because they claimed it was supposed to be covered in 2 inches of padding on all sides.
About a month later I shipped 2 rifles in the regular gun boxes. Stocks on both were demolished and they refused to pay the claim for the same reason. My gun shop said they have never had a problem with them paying a claim and all they ever use it the factory gun box.

Now I use only USPS and havent had a problem.

I think UPS employee's have a slam fest contest just for fun. Seriously, how much abuse can that gun case take??

What I can tell you is that if you ship guns by ups make sure there are very well supported, inner and outer box. Also insure the contents a bit higher that its value. We recieve alot of guns into our our gunshop daily and it never ceases to amaze me how a belgium browning could be broke in half? They do not care about whats in those boxes. We have yet to encounter a problem with a claim. Stay after them and I think they will follow through. The best is to over secure you boxes.
