Freebore

can someone explain free bore and what it means,I'm new to center fire benchrest and don't understand it. I have a short range 30 br bench gun with 0 free bore and am interested in a long range silloet gun and experienced shooters are talkin about all kinds of different freebores for different weight bullets etc.and there is a lot of different opinions on that also,I would like to understand it more thankyou

The part that is labeled .050 on the right about half way down.

It is the part of the chamber that is between the end of the cartridge case and the rifling. You want more for longer bullets and less for shorter bullets. If that description is not entirely accurate, someone will correct it soon.

Pick a pullet you want to shoot.

Seat the bullet in a dummy round so the boattail/bearing surface junction of the bullet sits at the same level or a hair above the brass shoulder/neck junction.

Take that dummy round to your gunsmith and he'll cut the freebore in your chamber with a throater to match the dummy round.

PT&G sells throaters that you can use with out a lathe if you dare. But it's a small job for a gunsmith to re-throat a chamber, not expensive.

Chamber/reamer descriptions:
1st Attachment a labeled reamer print, of my own interpretations (others may word things differently).
2nd Attachment with a case/bullet edited into the print (not proportionate, rough drawn representation).
