Working up loads for new Shilen 308win
I know the 215grain hybrid Berger in 308Win is a very long bullet. I have reloaded some in a standard chamber Shilen rifle. I also know that people have won in F class using 30" barrels, BR4 primers, palma brass and 43grains of Varget. This is a compressed load, if the freebore does not allow you to seat it further out.
My question is how do you determine the 'optimal' freebore?
I am guessing fill the case to 43 grains and carefully seat the bullet to where is just touches the charge and then measure COAL and base to ogive. Probably want to seat so that you can 'jump' 0.015" or less.
I would appreciate a more experienced opinion on this design.
PS sorry about the title, not shooting a 309 wildcat...
