Freebore For 180 ELD-M

I want to re-barrel to .284 Match. The only bullets available are the Hornady 180 ELD-M. How much free bore will I need to keep the base out of the donut?

My barrel is coming with a .230/.235 free bore which will work fine with the 162 ELD-M but not near long enough for the 180 ELD-M. Should work just fine with SMKs and Bergers. I do not have a clue why Hornadys have such a long bearing surface. I had to take the throat out past .300 to shoot the 140/147s in my 6.5X47L.

What twist rate do you have and what FPS did they blow up on? How do you know they blew up

I’d like to try them with an 8.5 or 9.0 twist at sub 2800 FPS. Don’t need the extra speed with that BC.

My 9 twist would not stabilize them and my 8.5 twist shot them very well until about 2,000 rounds. Then I think it was the fire cracking that pushed them beyond their limits. They sure shot well though! I shot my first 20 shot clean at 1k with them in my tactical rifle.

I will give you a few boxes to try if you want. Let me know if you want some and I can bring them next weekend.

P.S. If you will shoot them in the next big match I'll give you all you want......

I shot 2,000 of them before they started blowing up. Then I lost 6 in one match x-10-10-x-10-10-.....-no impact-no impact. Say what?? You could actually see them blow up. It was a little gray puff at around the 800 yard line. I actually found pieces of eldm jackets around the 800 yard line after blow ups.

My 26 inch barreled 284 launches them around 2800fps in a 1 in 9 twist near sea level with superb accuracy and I'm up too 2300 shots now and no blow ups but my f open 7mm saum will blow them up..
I don't use them in competition..
Never seen them disintegrate but they didn't make the target at 300yds. I was in the vbull then nothing, back in the vbull for several shots then a blank target again..
They're really good until they don't make it...!!
