free recoil with angled buttstock?

Shooting a 64mpr with front rail bag rider attachment but very angled buttstock and standard protektor bag.

Experimenting with total free recoil, only trigger finger contact, I had some initial good results but poor vertical(weak 9s) seems to be getting more common as I go.

Is this a losing proposition?

I'm shooting f-open style but I assume benchrest answers would apply as well?

thanks

Try shortening the pull ( distance from trigger to butt) by a 1/2” or more. Heavy jackets or extra clothes can interrupt the recoil.

I find that many Rimfire rifles actually do better when you hold it firmly. I continually experiment with this. My Kimber 82G with Stith stock at 13.5 lbs does well with free recoil, while the Kimber 82C sporter needs to be held tightly. Now I have an Anschutz 1416D HB that likes a little bit of hold.

In my meager experiments with a 40X I found that it shot better with a slight amount of pressure on the butt into the stop. I also found that the optimal location for the front bag on the forend was not compatible with a standard forend stop, and since my stock had a full length rail I used a simple hockey puck shaped aluminum hand stop, wrapped with foam tape that made contact with the back of the bag holder on my rest. I had fitted the rifle with a 2 oz. trigger and if I put just the right amount of shoulder into it, and pulled the trigger very carefully straight back, the results were noticeably better. IMO a lot of fellows seem to think that there is some virtue to shooting free recoil. There is if it produces the best results for your particular rifle and rest setup, but often it will not.

Swadiver,
The discussion is with regards to Rimfire, not centerfire! There is world of difference with handling Rimfire rifles.

Thanks for all the replies.
I'm practicing with the 22 but with possibly also taking the technique to HP in mind so that input is definitely welcome.

I have shot free coil for some years now due to a bad neck. What you are trying to do with an angled butt stock is very difficult to do with consistency, been there done that. You will inherit much better results with a stock that has a parallel forearm and butt stock. If you dont want to buy a new stock build a conversion boot for to bottom edge of your current stock. I have seen this done with fair success, it aint pretty but it may work for you.
Good luck

This is how I modified my Savage F-T/R rifle stock so it would ride true on the rear bag.

Applying very slight shoulder pressure on the stock worked well for me. This was my first F-Class rifle, which I used in 2014-2015.
