Franklin Arsenal Rotary Tumbling Kit

I just received the Franklin Kit and and have a few questions. Do you use all the pins when tumbling? How much Dawn do you use? Is Lime Shine worth the use? Are there better cleaning solutions? Do you have to fill the tumbler when cleaning light loads?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

I use stainless steel chips found online. the pins can get stuck in the flash holes and sideways in the necks.
use just a short squirt of Dawn and a tablespoon of Lemishine.

Yes, use all the pins . . . if you're going to use them. On bottleneck cases, where you really don't need to clean the inside of them (leaving the burnt deposit on the inside helps lubricate your seating process and doesn't hurt anything). So, cleaning the outside without the pins works quite well . . . though then you may want to clean the primer pockets with something like a primer pocket uniformer tool. It doesn't take much Dawn, so just a little squirt and about 1/4 teaspoon of Lemi Shine into HOT water and the brass can be clean in ~1/2 hr. For light loads, it's still best to fill the tumbler to the normal level so you get the proper tumbling action on the brass and not have the case mouths get beat up.

I need to replace the SS shine cracked SS, or take my SS pins that I have and grind them
I use very hot water
2 Blob of McGuire Car wash and wax
1/2 oz of Lyman Turbo Sonic
60-90mins
Like new brass

Fill it up, leaving just a bit of air at the top. Use all of the steel pins, or none at all, your choice. Steel pins really helps with nasty old brass, but really isn't necessary for brass in good shape like fresh from the range.

Direct from the Frankford Arsenal manual online:

The water here seemed to cause issues with LemiShine, I sometimes got pink brass even with just 1/4 teaspoon. So I stopped using it. Now I use Brass Juice and it's outstanding. Some people like shiny rifle stocks, I like shiny brass.

+1 on the Brass Juice. Good stuff!!

I put Dawn in one of those bathroom hand pump dispensers and use about 3 pumps. Sometime 4 if the brass is dirty (458SOCOM). I use about 1/2 tsp of LemShine and SS pins. I only tumble for about a 1/2 hour and it works fine.

I've heard that tumbling in dry rice works great and avoids the issue of case mouth peening when tumbling. I just haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

Thanks for all the great suggestions. The Dawn and Limi Shine seems to be the most popular solution.
Thanks again

Try it both ways with pins or not. I myself no longer use the pins. I'm satisfied with the level of cleanliness
without the pins and it's a heck of a lot less hassle. In my Rebel 17 I load 10 lbs. of 9MM brass with warm or hot water one inch over the top. Add one .45 ACP case of Lemi-Shrine and approx. 2oz. of Armor -All, Wash & Wax. Tumble for 1 or 1 1/2 hours and I'm good to go.

you don’t have to use lemishine but instead just a citric acid powder. Add a 9mm cap full of it to the water. Helps with water spots and make it shine.
Too much and you turn brass pink/rose as others mentioned.
I just give it a quick squirt or two of dawn n real measuring

I love this picture. makes me smile.

Occasionally, a 22 rimfire brass will end up in the mix. THAT sucks - might brake the decapping pin. Definitely stops the loading process.

Did you know that a 9mm will fit inside of a 40...and both will fit inside of a 45 acp or 44 mag? Yeah....that sucks too!

Did you know that 9 mm will fit over the end of a 223 casemouth?

40 fits as well. 45 will to. Same with 38/357 and 44 mags. :)
