Frank opinions on Stiller Actions

In Canada, we take it up the rosebud with the pricing of many custom actions presumably due to the obfuscated import/export permit fiasco.

Having said that, I have access a Stiller Tac338 for a 338 Lapua build and I was looking for frank opinions on their quality because they are less than half the cost of most actions.

What do you think of them? Do you own one?

I have a Viper that I bought used. I like the hard anodized alloy parts. The machining seems nice enough. If I ever buy a new action to build a rifle from I will get a drop port Viper.

I have a Stiller TAC30 that I had built up last year

The gun shoots ridiculously well. Granted, premium components were used throughout, but it still surprised me a bit.

My one,and only) gripe with the action is that it is a bit 'tight'. Being used to guns built for NRA High Power XTC using 'sloppy' Win M70 and Rem700 actions where I can literally 'fan' the bolt open and closed in a little over an eye blink... the fit of the TAC30 bolt to the corresponding hole in the receiver is awfully snug and doesn't take well to that sort of activity. No doubt thats part of why it's so accurate, but it is a little disconcerting at first when you go to 'slap' the bolt handle forward and it jams solid. Grab the handle and push it straight forward, and it closes fine. Attempt to whip it forward and down in one motion - locks up. Once you're aware of it, and know not to do that... it works just fine for me.

Monte can you give me the dimensions of your barrel contour?
I have a Tac-30 coming in shortly I hope.
It's gonna be 6.5 x 47L.
I like the looks of yours.
Any idea on weight with glass?

The barrel is a Rock 5R M24 contour. It is a little smaller at the shank than the full diameter of the receiver, and finished out @ 25". The original intent was to have it finished @ 26", but I ordered the barrel direct from Rock Creek and their flutes are very deep and were a bit further back on the barrel than I originally expected. The builder,R&D Precision) suggested going to 25" for aesthetic reasons, and I have to agree it seems to have worked out nicely. I think the total gun weight is something like 15lbs and change - like I said, those flutes are deeper than they look in the photo.
