Francis Scott Key Bridge, Baltimore Md.

It was leaving. I bet the ships maintenance program is the culprit.
21 inspections since built in 2015 with zero detentions.

More information about the ship itself

I'll say one thing...It looks like they had the containers locked down pretty tight. I saw some movement, but nothing in the water that I could see. Prayers for the missing contractors and their families.

There is another video of the vessel, it shows a complete lights out power failure, then power on huge dark smoke plume, then power out again. The captain was helpless at that point. I dont know the tonnage but it wont stop in 50 yards !

The video shows the ship losing power at a critical time.....would it have lost propulsion and steering at the same time? The track shows a substantial crosswind which could have pushed the ship into the bridge support. On a much smaller scale, anyone who has tried to navigate a houseboat would understand the effects of such a wind.

There seem to be a great deal of speculation out there.

How about that early quoted commentator saying the ship burst into flames and hence it sank. Good call. That commentator and this harbor pilot must be kin. I don’t know if this is proof for, or against using local pilots. If the whole crew had jumped ship from fear of the dark, this couldn’t have gone worse. It’s that last angle shift right into the pier, when they debrief Lucy, she can ‘splain that, capt. Hazelwood.

They also dropped the anchor before impact, shortly after the mayday was issued.

I was wondering about that ? years ago my old man was taking a ship into or out of port ( I don’t recall which) anyway the Portuguese pilot was in charge and went off course and run the ship aground ‘ the POS pilot tried to blame my old man and of course all hell broke loose Dad was eventually cleared of charges but what a mess.

We don't know happened other than the ship hit the bridge. Time will tell. When I was in the navy we would hold drills, One was called "crash astern" where we would go from forward to full astern. Everything would shake and shudder as the ship would slow down and finally stop then start going astern, it took a long way before stopping.

We know more than that. As I mentioned above, they issued a mayday - which allowed much of the traffic on the bridge to be blocked. In the mayday they said they lost power, which meshes with the video.

Also:

“The vessel notified Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) that they had lost control of the vessel and an allision [collision on the water] with the bridge was possible,”

Mayday before the bridge strike, reason traffic was being stopped. Port side anchor is below the surface of the water, but no info on when it was deployed or if it was intentionally deployed. The anchor chain is straight, to me it was not dragged. The harbor pilots statements haven't been released. Already terror theories abound, supply chain attack, executive orders last month, hazardous materials transportation.

My nephew works in logistics for one of the big lines (this wasn't his ship) and told me that some ports have a requirement that tugs have to be on station until the ship clears, but not Baltimore. Cheaper for the line to cut the tugs loose. I expect the Port and that line are reconsidering that now...
Dropping the anchor would do absolutely nothing.

Prayers for all involved.
