Forum Positivity and the Losada Ratio

As regular Forum visitors know, we try to maintain a non-combative, friendly environment on this Forum. We discourage harsh exchanges, and forbid personal attacks. We also encourage you to maintain positive attitudes towards your fellow forum members.

It turns out that maintaining a positive approach to issues benefits everyone involved. Both in corporate environments and in peoples' personal and family lives, people achieve more and have better relationships if they maintain a 5:1 ratio of positive praise to negative criticism.

80+% Positivity is Optimal
Interesting studies, employed to improve corporate productivity, show that people in teams work much more effectively if comments align with the 5:1 Losada ratio. This means that there are five positive comments for every negative comment (an 83/17% ratio). Remarkably, it has been found that people who enjoy success in their own lives (and marriages) also have a high ratio (at least 80%) of positive comments to negative criticism.

The positivity/negativity ratio (P/N) has been found to be a critical parameter to ascertain what kinds of dynamics are possible for a team (Losada & Heaphy, 2004). P/N is measured by counting the instances of positive feedback (e.g. "that is a good idea") vs. negative feedback (e.g. "this is not what I expected--I am disappointed"). Marcial Losada found that high performance teams have a P/N ratio of 5.6; medium performance teams have a P/N of 1.9 and low performance teams have a P/N of 0.36 (there is more negativity than positivity). These ratios determine the level of connectivity (cooperation) that a team can reach (Losada & Heaphy, 2004).

Interestingly, John Gottman (1994) found that similar ratios occur in marriages who flourish (P/N ratio of 5.1) and those who end up in divorce (P/N ratio of 0.77). Barbara Fredrickson and Marcial Losada found that individuals who flourish have a P/N ratio above the 5:1 Losada line and those who languish have a P/N ratio below the Losada line (Fredrickson & Losada, 2005). Waugh and Fredrickson found that the Losada line separates people who are able to reach a complex understanding of others from those who do not (Waugh & Fredrickson, 2006).

Somebody should have told that to Dr Phil before his divorce.
What is up with the clicks on powder?

This is the greatest forum going!

Paul,
What are you trying to say? Have we been getting out of line to much? has someone felt picked on? I think this is the cleanest forum out there by far!! There are people out there that are hell bent on arguing, admittedly I have accommodated if they get to ignorant and mouthy , but for the most part I am here to learn and teach when I can. I belong to quite a few other forums but don't frequent them much anymore, when I leave here to browse the other forums I come back to here a little stupider then when I left, takes me a couple of days here to replenish the the lost gray matter. Besides all the fighting and false data being given out on a lot of the other forums there is just plain ignorance running rampant!! I am surprised many of them don't hurt themselves or worse at there loading benches and if they actually make it to the range,... God help us all ??? Seriously cruise some of the other forums you will see I am right and will agree this is the greatest gun forum going PERIOD THE END!! I am proud to be a part of this great forum I think most of us make the 5:1 ratio of positive praise to negative criticism at least I hope we do ;)
Wayne.

I love this site and there are a couple guys who like controversy so I steer clear and enjoy exchanging ideas with others.

Jon,
That's exactly right, you are one of the many good friends I have made on here and always enjoy your thoughts, also I have noticed the trouble causers seem to weed themselves out! There there causing trouble and the next thing you know there gone ;)

jimT...jimmy cater is my 4th cousin! when i found this out i considered cutting my wrist, but i might have trouble shooting,so i reconsidered. when i was younger and not informed, i actually voted for carter...very few poeple know this. i realized i needed help, so i placed myself in therapy...BANG therapy. there is something therapeutic about shooting, not to mention the fun in reloading and sharing with fellow addicts...if i don't shoot twice a week, i get irritable and have trouble sleeping, etc. cheerfulness and happiness begets the same.
if i can see you, i can touch you. BANG!

When I was teaching in Northern Ontario in the 1970s, I thought setting myself up for a Masters Degree in BioChemistry would be a neat idea as a retirement project sometime in the future. So I applied to perform a Summer Research Project complete with defending my thesis at a local University with a good rep. This was a requirement to apply for a grant as a Masters candidate.

I was accepted and assigned to a Prof who supervised my work which was based on the heavy metal uptake by lichens from the stacks of local nickel smelters. Won`t go into all the details but my Prof stroked the hell out of my results to fit into his published works. I defended his thesis, not mine, and received an A+ for my efforts. My data was incorporated into his subsequent publications. My acknowledgement was a note saying "specimens gathered by a pre-masters candidate".

I am retired now and have no desire to apply as a Masters candidadte.

I do make an effort to keep my postings positive. Sarcasm or putdowns never helped anyone.

hey i got online today and seen this message at the top of my screen from the
forum boss:that you guys were being bad and the first thing that came to my mind, them dirty rats are dogging me..lol .. i looked around and could not find any bad post anywhere.

the best thing i like about this site is you can ask any question you want or state any opinion you want and you get good and bad info , but i have never really seen anything be completely negative to the point where someone was being degrading or out of line, so i
guess i missed it..But i will say other sites do get nasty with their remarks and replys.

Thats because the guys on this site are tops.

I always thought the catshooter was Alinwa from another forum?
Lynn

No Lynn, catshooter was catshooter. His online personality was nothing like his offline personality, almost ;) Had the pleasure of having him come to my private range and do some shooting. Very gracious man. Listened to my crazy ideas about rifle accuracy and never once swatted me with one of his Bear Paws ;D
