Forster Bump Die

Hummmmm. . . .that is not what the home page description says:

"You must use Forster-made bushings. This die does not work with Redding or Wilson bushings."

Moderator, we need to resolve this issue, please. Also, who has the new bump dies in stock?

In their latest product info, Sinclair's says:

"These [Forster Bump] dies are designed for shooters who want a tight fitting case in their chamber for better alignment. This die is only compatible with Forster bushings - does not work with Redding or Wilson bushings. When selecting a bushing size, choose a bushing approximately .002" smaller than a loaded round measures at the case neck. Bushings are available in increments of .001" for the cartridges shown."

I'll contact both Sinclair and Forster ASAP and see if we can straighten this out. I noted the Forster bushings have a significant chamfer, radius) around the bottom, and Forster told me these are "one-way only bushings". They are also appear taller than Wilson or Redding bushings. Perhaps that's why Sinclair concluded the dies can't use Wilson or Redding Bushings.

Here is the section of Sinclair's brochure covering the new Forster dies, click thumbnail for larger view):

Sinclair states the use of Forster bushings only, not Forster. If the bushings are a little taller it wouldn't matter anyhow.

OK guys, this is the latest. Direct from Forster. I talked to "Rod" in engineering today.

1. The Forster bushings ARE longer than current Redding or Wilson bushings.

2. The Forster bushings are the same outside diameter,O.D.) as Redding and Wilson bushings.

3. The official line is that Redding/Wilson dies are NOT recommended for this die because the internal die part that holds the bushing in place may not extend downward far enough to work optimally with the shorter Redding or Wilson bushings. So, you may only be able to size part of the neck.

Quote: "Other company's bushings may work pretty well in some calibers and not so well at all in other calibers with long necks."

4. So, you CAN use Redding/Wilson bushings in the sense that they will fit in place. The diameter is right. However, if you want the capability to size all the way down to the base of the neck, particularly in long-necked calibers, you should get the Forster bushings.

Hope this clears things up.

So all you have to do is use a spacer. I have a Redding Bushing Die for the 308 Baer, bought from Baer) with room for two bushings - you can use the die with two bushings or a spacer and a bushing. I

Looking at the instruction sheet for this die on Forester's web site it states to turn the die down to touch the shell holder or if reading further to even over cam the die slightly.
So, my question is just how much "bump" will you get with this die????? .001 I would assume would be about ideal or does it bump more????

After you determined where your headspace is where you want it-where the bolt closes with a little resistance,or where you want it) take a reading of that case with your case headspace gauge-then screw the die down until it pushes it to that point and lock the lock ring. If you screw die down until it touches shellholder and beyond-it's most likely pushing the shoulder excessively. Keep shooting one case and resizing neck only without pushing shoulder to reach your optium headspace-then set your die at that point-you can also use the Redding shaved shellholders in conjunction with this die so that you can push the shoulder .001" to .002" each time without excessively overworking your cases. Your chamber will have a lot to do with how much shoulder set back you have in these dies but my guess is you'll have more than you need.
