Forming a cartridge from other “parent cases” .

For all my reloading I tend to use bushing dies . When forming cases from a parent case and having to neck them down, for example a 22BR from a 6BR ,will it be easier to use a regular 22BR full length sizing die or just use the s-die full length sizing die. Another words does one type of die produce a better “ new” case than the other or it really does not make any difference.

If you are only going down from .243 to .224 just use a F/L dies. If you have to go down MORE than 20 thousandths, use two "in between" BODY dies. EXAMPLE: say you are going down to 6.5 (say a .260 from some .308 "Palma" brass.) FIRST STEP is a 7-08 body die. The second step is a .260 body die. Going down that far, I would also recommend neck turning at least 2 thousandths off the neck PRIOR to necking down to the .260 body die. Then you will need the correct bushing to size the case in the .260 Bushing die. You will then need to turn off a smidgen after that. Every time you neck down, the case necks get thicker.

If you size down by 2 steps, as mentioned, or more be sure to anneal your cases.
With that far of a sizing difference, it works the brass alot, and hardens it. Work hardning it's called.

When going from a longer case & making shorter, you may want to anneal the shoulder.
Example would be 308 to 6mm BR.
Or 6.5mm Rem Mag from 7mm Rem Mag.

If you go from 6BR to 22BR do you get a better finished end result using the s-die or the regular sizing die they make? Does the type of FL die have any bearing on the end result of the newly formed case?

If I am not mistaken Gasper if you use a bushing die to neck down a case you will not size the entire neck hence the need to use a standard non bushing sizer during the forming procedure.

I use forming dies to go down from 6BR to 20 cal and then run the cases through my 20 BRAI FL bushing die from Whiddens then fireform
