Forming a 223 AI case ?

I see two ways to blow the shoulder out and form an AI case
1. Take the Max listed charge of a powder for the base case, seat a J bullet so it jams into the riflings when the action is closed, and fire

2. Take a fair amount of a fast pistol powder ** fill the rest of the case with COW,oat meal,??, seat a culled cast bullet so it jams into
riflings, and fire

** case in question is a 223 AI, and I'm thing of 10 gn. of Unique

Generally, when ff with fast powder & COW, etc, there is no projectile just a wad, otherwise you may get dangerous pressures.

A .223 A.I. is no different than any other A.I. case, and although I have not done a .223A.I., I have done numerous others. Do NOT use a MAX charge and jam a bullet... Use just over the starting load for whatever bullet you are using for fireforming and jam that bullet. Example: let's say you are using a 50gr ballistic tip. A MAX load in the "regular" .223 will be about 26.0grs of Varget or RL-15 or H4895>>>>use right at 24.0grs and jam that 50gr bullet to keep the brass case hard against the boltface.. That will form that case just fine and safely!

heres a somewhat lengthy version of COW . he definately covers it thourghly

If your barrel is headspaced correctly you won't need to jam bullets. It should give you a very slight crush fit at the neck shoulder junction of a standard 223 case.

m500 is correct. I formed 200 cases during 1 PD shoot this summer by simply loading a pretty stout load of H335 behind 40 gr. V-Max and was 1/2 MOA -- accounted for lots of dogs. Did not load them into the lands and they fireformed perfectly.

Same here. Used the load I had developed before I had the barrel AI'd. Bolt closed with some resistance. That (resistance) is what you want.

Dittos on a properly done AI chamber resulting in a light crush fit with properly sized cases. I fire form using standard loads with bullets 75grs or heavier in practical/tactical steel matches; accuracy is plenty good enough to be competitive out to 600yds. In today's component market, this makes a heckuva lot more sense than just blasting bullets into a berm to form AI cases.

Works for the 223AI I have. Shooting PD if my favorite way of making brass.
