Forming 6XC brass frrom 6.5x47laupa

have anyone tried to use 6.5x47lapua brass in a 6XC? I would see the benefit of the Lapua case quality compared to both Norma 6xc and different 22-250 cases. I could also try the myth of big versus small primer.

The only thing that i see is different is a neck down and that the XC is a little bit longer but should be pushed out in a fire form.

The problem is the overall case length of the 6XC brass that you make out of the 6.5 x 47 Lapua brass would be about .050' too short. When you blow the shoulder forward with a case like that the brass would not grow longer.

I have read some time ago D Tubb did try small vs. large primers when he was developing the 6XC, but due to the larger volume of powder,i.e. ~39 grns) he found more consistent ignition with the large rifle primer instead of the small. Perhaps you could do the 'mythbuster' with the 6.5x47L brass!!

I was sizing 6XC brass after the Bash at Rifles Only and came across a 6x47 case. I didn't realize this until it was jammed in my 6XC sizing die. The base of the case is a little larger in x47. This got me to thinking.hmmmm. I had picked up 20 6.5x47 cases during the match. In a moment of boredom, I necked them down to 6mm, ran them through the 6XC sizer with decapping pin removed. The flash holes are smaller so I drove them out with a very small punch. Loaded them into the lands and fireformed to 6XC. I have not got around to see what they'll do after formed and doubt I ever will because IMHO it's not worth the PITA.

but i think that that actually answers my question, it can be done and then i just have to try it. My main goal was to see if the lapua brass was better than the norma but as you said it might not be worth it. But whats free time for other than testing these things.

thanks for the answer.

I've got three 6x47s & one 6XC, so am taking some pains to avoid getting cases mixed. While I'm a big fan of Lapua brass, I'm very pleased with the Norma XC brass I bought from SSS. It's good enough to load right out of the bag, though I'm running it through a Forster/Bonanza FL die to iron any dings out of the necks and get uniform neck tension.

So far, the only rifle I've got in 6XC is built on a trued Howa action with a Bartlein .237' bore in 7.8-tw. I noticed some small indentations in the caseheads from the ejector plunger in the initial loads I tried with Data 86 powder & DTAC 115s. The same load in any of my 6x47s shows no sign of excess pressure, so right away, I became a little paranoid about how tough the Norma cases are.

I checked case capacity of the two rounds by filling unfired cases with TAC ball powder and weighing 5 charges out of each one. The average difference was 2grs. more out of the XC case. Since my reamers are both throated for the 115s, I expected the XC to handle the Data 86 charge without a problem. All of the shooting I've done since with the XC has been with RL17, and even with the 115s running well over 3000fps, I haven't seen any more indentations or other sign,s) of pressure.

The skyscreen rail on my CED chrono broke at the plastic hinge a week or so ago when the wind blew the tripod over while I was down checking & painting targets - as soon as I get a new rail fabricated, I intend to do some side-by-side chrono testing to get a better idea of how the cartridges,as well as small & large primers) compare.
