For those that use lanolin/alcohol to lube cases?

Definition of ethanol

  1. : a colorless volatile flammable liquid C2H5OH that is the intoxicating agent in liquors and is also used as a solvent and in fuel —called also ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol
They are the same thing.

12/1 ratio
Toss in tumbler and SS pins with dawn dish soap for 10 minutes, rinse under water till soap is gone.
Blow out excess water with air compressor and ready to load when interior of case is dry.

I have been using 16:1 (alcohol to Lanolin) for several years now. It is my opinion that you only need a film on the case, not a thick layer. No stuck cases in many thousands processed, so it works well enough for me.

Now, on to the original question. To remove the lanolin after sizing, I use 90+% rubbing alcohol from the dollar store to rinse my cases. I save the rinse alcohol, and use it to rinse several batches of cases over weeks or months with no ill effects. I let the cases dry, then tumble in walnut/cob. When the rinse alcohol looks kinda scurvy, I get rid of it as waste solvent.

Your mileage may vary, but this procedure works for me.

Hope this helps,

Frank

I use one bottle of rcbs case lube (the stuff for the pads) and one bottle of is heet red bottle.

Put a bunch of cases in a large zip lock bag, 3 shots from a dollar store spray bottle and mix. Dump the brass into an open plastic container and let sit for 5-10 min to let the alcohol evaporate.

Other than both being an alcohol they are not the same, ethanol and isopropyl are chemically different which is why I asked. The chemical formula you list "C2H5OH" is indeed ethanol, isopropyl has a different chemical formula. No worries, I use isopropyl like the majority of others. Thanks

They are different in that one is a primary alcohol and the other a secondary. Ethanol can be metabolised and isopropyl cannot (in quantities). I apologize for using the term ETOH as you are correct that there are differences. I also use the 'iso' compounds.

You're supposed to use 99% isopropyl alcohol, and it's only reasonably priced by the gallon.
For YEARS I've this system. Take an OLD pair of Levis, cut the leg off, sew it into a sack. I put about 50 rnds (sized and lubed) into it, close with a draw string. Wash in laundry with all my work clothes and SHOP rags. Dry in sun or in 175* oven (oven lit for 1 hr then leave for ________min/hrs.

High tech industries are typically very clean conscious.
They have used isopropyl alcohol for cleaning electronic and semiconductor equipment for over 40 years.
Nothing we do remotely approaches the cleanliness level of the semiconductor business.
Buy 99% isopropyl (IPA) at Walmart or a drug store on sale.
I use it to rinse and dry all my cartridge cases for at least 20 years.

We use Oxy Clean. Use a separate barrel for the tumbler, without the pins and run for about 20 minutes. Works for me.

Since the original topic was how to clean the lanolin off the brass, I'm not sure why 99% would be needed. The 92% seems to work fine for me. I save the wash-out for the first rinsing, pour it off and add a few dashes of fresh 92% for a clean rinse off. I have an old metal coffee can with a lid that I use for this.

I use a commercial, lanolin-based spray to lube my brass.

My apologies, I thought you were discussing the mix of the lube, I tumble my brass, has worked for 30+ years.

Just rinsed some sized cases in denatured alcohol (ethyl alcohol with methyl alcohol to keep someone from drinking it) and it appears to remove the lanolin well. I don't know why I did not use it before and went straight to Naptha (quick drying mineral spirits). Easier to dispose of and actually dries quicker than Naptha.

I've found another trip through the ultrasonic cleaner does the job reasonably well (heated, with dash of simple green or soap).
