For the “One gun to do it all” guys.

Here is my opinion. If hunting only in USA then a 300 Win. Mag. If hunting globally a 375 H&H Mag. If only one rifle to hunt the world a 375 H&H.

one gun?

that guy is usually pretty good with it.

again it depends on what you are trying to do.

if you are a one dimensional shooter hunting in your area, short or long range benchrest, some other competition you can have one gun that exceeds at that task.

i draw the line between hunting and range guns. Don't mix the two.

but if you are going to use the rifle for multiple task you will have to compromise. it won't be great at more than one or with a true compromise will be effective for all but not great at any.

I believe in the right tool for the job thoughts, but. One can get good service from an adjustable wrench, or pound out horse shoes witha claw hammer.

45-70,458WM, 458 Lott one and done, mice to moose. Jacketed and cast. I have loaded those three down basically from soft 45 colt to top end loads for all with good accuracy.

You can always down load but going up is harder.

I like my 6.5 saum but having a lot a fun with a 6br for my son.
Joshb do you have one of those( the fist hammer in the pic)

Wouldnt the one with the red shank be considered a rubber mallet?

And this more of a dead blow?

I had a supervisor ??? once who could screw up a steel ball with a rubber mallet. {like a shot put}

Seriously though, I think you can do it all with a good 6mm. Just a little bit of tweaking here and there and you can do pretty well. Thats what I've tried to do anyways. Though this winters projects are to have dedicated rifles for different types of matches. For the sake of not having to load, shoot, reload that night to shoot the next match the following morning. Though like last year, I will probably only want to show up with whatever barrel is shooting best, and go back into last years routine lol.

EDIT: Though I dont compete in the IBS short range, I do also compete in 200,300,500 "ground hog" matches as my short range game.

I hear ya. I think that’s why the reaction here is so strong. To me, the idea of “One gun” is preposterous! I got to thinking about this explanation as a way to show any newbie the error in such thoughts. I used a different example on my wife. She asked me the “Why do you need another gun?” question. We were in the kitchen having morning coffee. I started pulling out all her pots and pans and placing them on the counter, asking “What’s this one for?” She got my point, tho I think I ended up on the couch that evening.:(
For a second as I was reading your post, I thought you were gonna explain the absurdity of "one wife" LOL--spewed my coffee.

Be glad she didn't start dragging out shoes...

Well....again....I didn't wade through 3 pages of posts. My nephew just asked what to build for an all around gun for up here. Now......Moose and elk are off the table, but med range big deer are not. Lots of varment and lr plinking. So we put together an 8 twist SA 700 with a McMillan stock, Jewell trigger and a 26 inch 6.5 caliber 8 twist Krieger in 6.5 - 47 L.

Fun spending other peoples money!!

You just gonna leave us all hangin'???? Lets hear some details!!!!
Shehane African Obeche stock, Brux barrel, Borden action, Seekins DBM, Calvin Elite trigger, Talley-Borden lightweight one piece ring-base combo, seating die by Dusty Stevens. Crafted by KW Precision (Keith Weil) in 250 Ackley.

With that and my 20 gauge SxS, I don't need anything else. I have 7 reloading presses, but I don't need that many. I've got all kinds of chit I don't need, and I'll never recover the money I put into each item.

Heck, I can't even settle on one gun per cartridge. I have multiple .22LRs, .45 ACPs, .44 magnums and even once had three identical Remington 700s in .17 Remington for a while. Result of a complicated multi-person trade that I still can't explain. I have often had more than one .223, .22-250, 30-06 and 45-70s.
One gun? Don't talk foolishness.!

That one I do not have! What’s it for?
Rusty bolt puller?
Board stretcher?
WAG? You work for the CIA pulling fingernails?

I can relate. Mine was a .257 Roberts built on a ‘93 Mauser. It’s where I learned to earnestly reload as well.

The 257 Roberts, in my humble opinion, is one of the best all around cartridges ever developed. It's a shame that it fell by the way side after the 243 was introduce. Don't get me wrong, I love the 243, I currently have four and shoot them a lot.

My say tale is that my uncle who could no longer hunt offered to sale his 257 Roberts to me, a Winchester Model 70. Didn't have the money at the time and I was very happy with my 243 Win but I wished I could have bought it.
