This was about 6 months in the making working on and off between building rifles. I’m calling it my gen 1 spotting scope stand as I’m sure I’ll have to tinker with it multiple times.
I wanted a new spotting scope stand but wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted or where to get it from so I started looking at others and this is what I came up with. The mast is a 1” stainless rod that’s threaded to separate so that it’s lighter and travels easier along with having the ability to use in F-Class and run it all of the way up and stand and spot in LR Benchrest. The base was an aluminum log drop that a customer at my day job gave to me. The legs are flat bar that I bought from a local metal supply center.
I bought the spotting scope mount from Creedmoor Sports and bought the set screws and wing nuts from Fastenal. I milled, drilled, tapped, threaded and cut everything else on the lathe.
It’s a little heavier than I wanted and believe it or not milling the slots in the flat bar saved more weight then I thought it would. I used to have the before and after weights but lost my notes.
