For a Remington 700 Bolt, which is the best extractor system?

I'm fed up with the "clip" type extractor Remington uses in their 700 bolt and want to consider a replacement bolt. Of the bolts available, it seems that two extractor systems are available. The M-16 style and the Sako. Of these, which is the most reliable? Does either have it's downside? Does either create any safety issues?

Just curious before I spend a bunch of bucks.

I am wondering what problems you have had with your current Remington extractor. I have never had an issue with any Rem extractor myself, nor have any of my budies I know of. Could your current extractor need replacement? This would be the least costly solution. Failing that I have a push feed Winchester Model 70 in 300 WSM which has a Sako type extractor which has never been a problem, and several AR-15's which have never had extraction problems either. Your gunsmith can give you the price breakdowns, but I would recomend you have him check to see if a new Rem extractor won't solve your problem. Best of luck.

If you choose a newer style,I recommend the m16 extractor as they are pinned into the bolt body and wont blow apart if a primer pierce's.The sako can come out and come down the raceway in pieces and due severe damage to you in worst case scenario.

Remington extractor is the safest type hands down and very reliable in 308 bolt face. What problems are you having? I would not even consider a sako due to safety concerns

I am thinking of the M16 type and know what it looks like. What is the Mini 16? is it just a smaller or more narrow M16 type?

Sako - it's an expensive fix but it will solve the problem. I've seen several Rem 700's over the last year at the range with the same extractor problem - some so bad that a factory round can not be chambered without excessive force. The problem appears to be that the extractor will not slide over the bolt rim or it's gouging it making chambering difficult or impossible.

My gunsmith had several in his shop and is intalling Sako extractors as the fix.

I have several Rem 700's and a few Model 7's - all old like me and none of these exhibit these problems - this appears to be something with the newer ones coming out of the factory even though it looks to be the same design as the older models.

M16 style for sure. I've seen them and they work flawlessly and are very heavy duty.

My father in law has to keep multiple sako extractors on hand to replace them when one breaks or sometimes blows apart with a ruptured primer blowout. The sako extractors are very weak..

Another vote for the Mini M16 extractor. Much more robust and safer than a Sako. IMHO

Exactly my problem. Even removing the old one, cleaning the bolt face/recess, installing a new extractor, and the problem is back in no time at all. It appears that the clip is chewing off pieces of brass that eventually build up behind the clip. This happens sometimes in less than 50 rounds which is an average range session for me. I clean, clean, clean, blow out with air, and even use a cocktail type tooth pick to clean out all the nooks and crannies. No help. Still fouls up.

It seems like the majority prefert the M-16 type extractor. I'll be replacing the whole bolt as I also want a single piece with tac handle. Now, which bolt body would be recommended? PTG? Other? Considered a Tubb but in contacting them they don't have a current manufacturer, are out of stock, and can't say when they'll have more.

Any suggestions are welcome.

It was a PTG that I saw in action with the M16 extractor. VERY NICE! The bolt is much nicer than a factory 700 bolt body and you can get them in an oversized style if you want so they aren't so sloppy in the raceway

I would get a .6995 or if you have a .705 bolt race way then get a .7038 Remington bolt with the mini 16 cut . That way you take the slop out and have the most accurate and safe after market extractor system to date. I say that because the next extractor we are going to put in a Remington bolt is the HS Precision design and it may be better but we need to check it out and have H.P. White Labs check it for us. I am shocked this week end because I found out John Noveske from Noveske Rifle works was killed this week end in a car roll over. Its a sad couple of days as he was a very good man.A very good Friend has been lost . May our God have a special place for him. Dave

I started competitive shooting in 1979 (Showing my age) I have been witness to multiple extractor problems with the 700. Mostly breaking in two pieces at the rivet. Obviously the new floating extractor is a real improvement. I would be interested in what it takes to install the floating extractor in the older 700 bolt. Anyway to the question, I have several 40X receivers that have had the Sako extractor installed and never a failure with them.

I would be interested to know how many of those problems were the result of heavy loads or stuck cases. Had a problem myself with the latter. Later! Frank

I have always considered the 700 factory extractor to be a weak point in its design. Now for those guys that have never had a problem , good luck, but the two trains of thought are there are those that have had problems with them and those that will have problems with them! I have owned 2 700's that have been converted to the Sako style extractors and they never malfunctioined. However if I were doing another 700 today I would do the M-16 style due to the concerns listed above. As for expensive, I spent $85.00 to have mine done! but that was 16 years ago!

what nobody seems to be telling you is that the Sako extror will result in the ejection angle changing to 2 pm instead of 3pm, so depending on the combination of case and scope, it can (and does with my 6br) eject the case so it hits the scope turret! I now have to get a small shield made up to prevent this! otherwise the case falls back into the loading bay~!@#$%
