Food Saver or Gun Saver???

Shooting when I can
Silver $$ Contributor
So this story starts with a Walther DSM .22lr that i am going to store for a long time never going to shoot this gun never want it to rust knowing that it's a hell of a collectors piece.

I started to do some online shopping for storage devices and bag to keep out moisture and air which in the Southern part of the US. Is a rust magnet so after looking for several hours i didn't want to pay $40 for a bag that i didn't think was air tight.

After a bit i decided to get a snack out of the kitchen and what do i come across a food saver.

So one air tight bag + Really old rifle = No rust

This is a idea for all us married guys with food savers in our house another multi-use tool and no rust on our awesome guns.

eric, good luck with the vacum paks-- I unsealed a 94 win.3 weeks ago thats been hanging in a metal shop for 11 years & still looks great. this win. 94 is a 1958 model, new unfired, for preparation i wiped the gun with a rig rag & then make sure the barrel was clean & dry then shrink wrap, i also did the box & all the paper work. This is by far the best way to store firearms long term-------------good luck

thanks alot that is really encouraging i plan to stick it in the back of the safe and not touch it for ten years or so. Or until my daughter is old enough to shoot

Why not double bag it??

i dont think double bagging will be of any value in this case. Unless i am missing some obvious sarcasm.

Plastic is not an oxygen barrier. You will want to keep an eye on that rifle from time to time. It also dings easily.

Two of the last few rolls of FoodSaver bags that I bought have seam problems. They let go after a few weeks. Keep an eye on it.

What you will also need to watch out for are sharp points and edges.
I have taken to using strips of clean dry cotton-read old tee shirts- run them in the dryer to get them nice and dry, lightly soak with a CLR or other lube of your choice and wrap or pad the edges so they do not poke through.
Have done a few magazines as such and am up to 8+ months and still holding a vacuum and all looks well.
Easy to tell if the vacuum is lost as the package no longer has that shrink wrap look.
I can see no evidence of any corrosion on the surface of the metal at this point and will continue the "study".
I really like the idea of the specialty made Z bags for long term storage but not the cost.

Best of luck
Gary

I vaccum sealed three S&W's ten years ago, one a 38 Squeezer (new, unfired), have the original box but did not seal it. Just looked at all three last week and they're still very tight, you may consider just wraping a paper towell around the sharp places to keep from puncturing the bag.

I've done this also and like others have mentioned , the weak link is the quality of the bag. Buy a good high quality bag and it should work out fine.

love my vacumn sealer. may be overkill but i vac seal primers in boxes of 1000 and the seals are good. leave the bag long so you can reseal if removing several small boxes. how would sealing a bag after cosmolining a gun work?

i dont know about the cosmolining, but just lightly oiled the gun and packaged it away. ill post up some updates in about a year or so.

Erik 32,

There was NO obvious sarcasm meant, in any way or shape.

MY LINE of thinking was if there was a hole in the bag some where, like leaning the weapon up against the rack and creating a hole, etc that 2 layers would be better protection.

I do not post obvious sarcasm, like several on this site do, UNLESS I receive info
that warrants that type of reply back. ;)

Good point , about the holes I didn't think of that. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something.
