Food for Thought

Two of my several rifles are with heavy target barrels; both of 26" length. One a .308 Winchester...the other a 22/250 with 1-7 ROT....308 has 1-10 twist. Both extremely accurate at long range. I shoot the Sierra 90 gr. bullet in the 22/250 with 36.0 grs. H4350 and I shoot the #2155 Sierra Palma bullet using 46.5 grs. Varget in the .308 Winchester. Both have Remington 700 actions. Both rifles foundation zeros set at 200 yards.

At 800 yards here are the MOA required to be zeroed:

22/250=18.0 MOA

.308=23.0

Interesting for sure. Having done some recent reading as to the advantages of more bullet wgt from 800 onward and knowing that the variables don't contribute to result linearity, the flight time (fps) vs wgt has to converge somewhere along the way re WIND.
Now, if we only knew where..... ;) That's the Question of the day.

Lots of folks kinda grin when the 22/250 is mentioned but it does pretty good....considering it doesn't take a thermos jug full of powder to get it going!!
I’m a great fan of the .22-250. Killed a bazillion ground squirrels with 2 of them, and a good handful of pigs with an Ackley’d third.

My neighbor killed the biggest buck I’ve ever heard of with a 22-250 , damn thing field dressed 304 lbs. I asked him how it did,.. he said it rolled him like a tin can. Wow

One rifle shoots flatter than the other. Is there something else I’m missing?

Yesss, flatter = less flight time = less time for the zephyrs to play.

Heavier = more flight time in FTR = more wind deflection B U T less deflection b/c of 2x the wgt, but more surface area to push against.....some old salts would call it sail factor.
As I said, there is a point of convergence when the variable factors align.
