Flying with components?

Guys

Are we allowed to fly with empty (new) brass still in the packaging and loose bullets still in their packaging in THE CHECKED BAGGAGE?

No primers are flying and no gun. I just want to take some components back to pa for some groundhog shooting

Thoughts?!

Greg

As long as it is not powder or primers you are good to go. If there is any loaded ammunition it needs to be in factory type packaging or a locked ammunition box (see TSA regs for that one).

ya i have the loaded stuff in a PMC 100 round case.

i read through the tsa rules but they seemed a little vague and I wasn't too sure. Thanks for the help

I tried flying out of Jacksonville FL recently and the TSA agent told me no on my empty fired cases that I had bagged up(ziplock). In the interest of not wanting to attract further questions or hassle I walked them out to my mom who luckily for me had not left. Eventually I'll have her just mail them my way.

Greg: A lot depends on the attitude of the agent who you come in contact with. Many years ago, long before there was a TSA, I tried to board a commercial flight from Cleveland to Pittsburgh, with about 100 empty, fired 30-06 cases.

The agent went ballistic when she saw the empty brass, began screaming, almost hysterical, causing a scene that thankfully got the attention of a supervisor, who did have a brain, and he straightened out the "misunderstanding".

I would never attempt something like that again. Just mail the brass (or anything that is not hazardous) and be done with it. A really bad experience for me, one that I will never forget.

The problem is that you are dealing with the lowest level of government employee who has minimal understanding of the regulations that they are required to enforce, in all likelihood may not have the capacity to actually understand said regulations if in fact they cared, and has high percentage chance of getting off on a power trip telling you no, and on top of that may be highly influenced by the social setting from which they come (good f'n luck in California).

Best answer may be to contact the airport before traveling, or ship it to your destination.

Bottom line, good luck.

...

Exactly!

So I talked with tsa today at the airport they took a look art everything and deemed it OK for checked baggage.

Brass IF BRAND NEW is ok. If it is fired with residue then you could have an issue. Bullets, unloaded in their packaging was deemed ok as well.

I am at the gate now happy everything made it through without issue

Good for you Greg! Always pays to contact a Supervisor before hand. Get his name and get him to cite the particular regulation. When you are abused by a mono-syllabic bureaucrat you can request a Supervisor and neutralize the threat.

I fly with live ammo and brass all the time in checked baggage. Usually about 600 rounds .Perfectly legal. The ammo has to be in suitable ammo boxes. Believe it or not you can actually have the ammo in the same locked gun case with your rifle. The maximum amount of ammo is 11 pounds. I leave out of NY so I always have a print out of the regulations in my pocket in case I get a TSA agent that has no clue. Empty shot brass is also no problem.

Someone else was talking about his carry on baggage, totally different story. It has nothing to do with the TSA agents attitude. Either its legal or it isn't. That's why I keep the regulations in my pocket.

After a few times dealing with taking brass and bullets through airport TSA security I always put it in my checked baggage now. You would think TSA at different airports would be more standardized but that is not always the case. The residue in fired brass is a great point because if you do not wash your hands after handling fired brass or shooting and go to the airport directly from the range and they decide for some reason to run the swab test on your hands you may show up positive on the test for explosive residue. This happened to a friend of mine who went to the airport directly from the range and got a random swab test of his hands.

FedEx it overnight and it will beat you to wherever you're going. Or flat rate 2 day shipping in the flat rate USPS boxes.

That doesn't make sense to me. That you have to pay for and there is a chance you will never see that package again. It's simple, put it in your checked baggage. It's perfectly legal and you don't have to pay extra or risk it getting lost.

Here's my experience. TSA regs and federal regulations say one thing and some air carriers have different restrictions on the contents of your checked & unchecked baggage. I ship my ammo in my checked baggage, declared at the ticket counter and a special tag is affixed to the bag denoting the contents. My guns are checked by TSA agents and then locked up for shipment on the same flight. Haven't had a problem.
