Bolt Knobs I made to go along with the fluting. The big one is about the same size as thee Badger Knob.
The small one is the perfect size for a hunting rifle.

Re: Playing with the Mill

Thanks.

Yeah, "The BILL"!

But, thats the price ya gotta pay if you wanna play.

I'm open for business if you wanna get yer flutes on.

Re: Playing with the Mill

Looks great Dennis.

Think Joe is getting a big order up to send you soon. I'll have a few to add to the pile...

Re: Playing with the Mill

Looks like fun. CNC Programming mills was my specialty, years ago.
I liked the Haas VF-3 with 5-axis tilt rotary addition.
Programmed it using Macros to always know where ZEROs were regardless of either axis of rotation.

Re: Playing with the Mill

Now I guess thats what they call "a real man's tool". With all my technology knowledge I still wish I had the knowledge and skill to use a lath, mill and or a CNC (a real man's tool) like some of you guys. Thanks for being there and having not only the equipment but knowledge to use these tools to perform wok for those of us less fortunate.

Re: Playing with the Mill

That is one beautiful new toy. Like getting a new Ferrari, I imagine. I'm just an old woodworker. What you guys do with metal amazes me! Have fun with her. I'm jealous of your tech skills. It takes me an hour to figure out which wrong button I pushed, on the TV remote. Enjoy!

Re: Playing with the Mill

I knew nothing about CNC or CadCam stuff when I went to work at Harrell's. I had the drive to learn and ambition to do top shelf work.

I got my FFL about the same time and have been doing work on my rifles and customer's rifles.

The Haas has allowed me to do things that are difficult to do or impossible to do on a manual mill.

Re: Playing with the Mill

Have you tried fluting a barrel following the twist rate of the barrel interior? or the reverse thereof ?
Thread milling is fun, and sometimes the only way to complete a project.
Look into reverse cut threadmills from Israeli Military Industries, allows rough finish cuts in one pass from top down instead of bottom up. I've used them to cut deep cast inconel threads. Only lose 1 thread due to rougher design of first thread form.

If desired, I can send you a Excel program that outputs a thread milling program. Among many other tools and tricks used.
I miss machining, but my age and disability prevents employment in a manufacturing environment.

Re: Playing with the Mill

those threads on the Winchester bolt were cut from the top down.

I used cutter comp to sneak up on the fit i wanted.

Re: Playing with the Mill

Good talking with you yesterday Dennis. Looks like I'll be sending six bolts your way Monday.

Re: Playing with the Mill

Hey Dennis,
Do you have any idea on pricing for your bolt fluting? Do you offer any other smithing services?
Thanks

Re: Playing with the Mill

Been twisting handles on old machinery for longer than I care to remember but it still amazes me what a skilled craftsperson can do with a CNC machine. That is some beautiful precision work. Hope you make a bunch of money with it. Hog

Re: Playing with the Mill

I just got 6 bolts back from Dennis. The turn around time was 8 days including shipping and a weekend thrown into that time.

I requested 3 different patterns and the work is very good.

The only thing I wish is that I had more to send. May have to buy a couple of cheap SPS' s ;)

Thanks Dennis. Your new toy and you do good fast work.

Re: Playing with the Mill

Another plus for Dennis' bolt fluting ... I received mine back today as well. I had 5 done in the flat series 2, they all turned out great. If you're considering getting yours done, don't hesitate, you won't be disappointed in his work.
