Floating Barrel...

I was thinking about floating the barrel of my 280 Ruger MKII and my 7mm08 Rem 700 CDL. Both guns have pressure points near the end of the forearm.

I am worried that if I take the action out of the stock to float the barrel I might not tighten the action back to factory specs or something... I wasn't wanting to bed the action or anything since I know very little about that.

I am just wondering if I can mess anything up by taking the stock off, free floating the barrel, then putting the stock back on??? Thanks,

You'll probably mess up the sighting when you remove the stock, but you sure won't hurt anything, and it won't be off that much when you put it back together.....
Just tighten the screws back down with a good amount of pressure and you'll be fine...
If you find they shot better with the bump in place, just use a bit of card stock to bring it back, and then glass it if you feel like it....
Lots of info on glassing on here, and it's easy to do, and will more than likely increase your accuracy....

Thanks for the info preacher! I sure do appreciate it. I just wanted to make sure I wouldn't make it worse or something. Good to know I can fix it if I mess it up. Thanks again...

A simple way to test if a floated barrel works w/o removing the pressure points: I use some plastic sheeting thats about credit card thickness, but flexible. On a 700 remington, I cut a piece that fills from the recoil lug to about an inch forward of the stock bolt. I do the same for the rear bolt area. This method will answer your question of floating w/o physically changing anything about your stock
