FLIR scopes

School me please.
It looks like the price of at least middle arena seating is north of $3k.
What I've looked at has some seemingly very short eye relief.
Options, opinions and hopefully first hand info wanted on desired features.
All ears here and thanks.

Ive used a FLIR RS32 35mm for 5 years now and its been a good one. Its heavy and only rechargeable on-board battery. But can run it off a USB backup battery. I paid $4700 for it back then.

Now i have a FLIR PRO PTS233 and its worlds better than the old RS32 and less than half the price. Did a group buy and got them under $1950 each. It takes CR123 batteries but will also run on a USB battery backup like you can charge your cell phone from.
Ive been working alot so havent had much time to tinker with the new one. The old one (RS32) has taken almost 750 hogs and prolly just as many deer on depredation permits for several farmers.

New one (PRO PTS233) has a huge difference on clarity and FOV and is lighter.

Ill look for my pictures and post them up if i can find them.

It has onboard Image and Video recording.

I’ve been looking at Trijicon, they bought out a company that is way ahead of the curve on thermal. They have a model that can be used as stand alone or clip on, she’s bad, but 8k....ouch. I would definitely do a group buy if there was interest. They have some models in the 3k range all the way up to 12-14k I think. From my research you have to be wary of what they say magnification is. It gets sooo grainy it’s almost unusable. 8x on a good model is about it. 4 on your lower end stuff.

Eye relief ever a problem? It seems the ATNs I spec'd out were very short iirc. I don't need the thought of scope eye messing with my shot delivery.

Mounted on AR, in complete darkness, you can remove the rubber eye piece.- or link it to your phone, aim & shoot, or have your boy aim it, while you watch.. lots of fun.
Mounting it comfortably is the key, not goose necking, or not trying to chip your cheek bone.
We have several of these, and use them from mid April through August. The newer ATN’s are better than the older 10k versions

Come down Tom, I let you use one..

Hmmm, sounds like an offer I'd be hard put to refuse. I need to make a run to upstate SC to do some chambering and get some bench lessons.....PM me your general "20".
I might be able to make it dovetail with your work schedule.

That baby FLIR unit looks great, but i sure wish it had the "picture in picture" aiming feature that the Pulsar units have. IMHO, the "PIP" feature was a major deciding factor in my choosing a Pulsar, over the FLIR. Being able to have that instant 'zoom factor' to place a shot acurately is a real nice bonus!

Beyond that, the TRAIL series of Pulsar units have super battery life from their proprietary battery...

Ive been running the newer Pulsar Thermal XP38, 640 core, ran just a tad over 4K on sale w/free shipping. Has onboard recording/picture, picture in picture viewing, many options on reticles, options for different ranges, or other guns if you move it gun to gun. Very sharp viewing, easy to operate, has removable rechargeable battery, can charge in the vehicle via USB hook up.
Like many thermals you can shut off the display and it comes right back on when ready on a stand.
I usually leave mine on all the time on stand and made a lens cover to block the light off the back end when its in my lap.
You can buy a backup battery 20hr pack as well as the standard pack OR use a battery pack if you plan to run it consistently. The basic battery has lasted me all night long o far.
I have 103 coyotes to it since I got.
I went with the 640 core since I do a ton of predator control at night on private ranches.
My pal runs a FLIR PS32, 35mm thermal, internal battery, does run off backup battery attached to rifle if needed, charges vis USB from your vehicle. I feel there are many newer thermals that outshine it & cost a lot less as stated above
No matter what you do get Id definatley make sure you can replace the batteries instead of an internal battery you cant swap.

Ive never had an issue with the short eye relief but i only have them mounted on ARs so they fit pretty good.
Ive never used anything with PIP but zoom on the PTS 233 is just one button and you can go from your base magnification to 2x and 4x in one and 2 clicks.
Zooming is it does get grainy but its a sub $2000 thermal so i wouldnt expect much.
I do most of my shooting on the base mag or 2x.
Something to look out for is on some of the thermals you can have a issue with a floating zero. I think its the Pulsar Trails? Id have to look it back up.

I like the Laure QD mount on the RS32 and the ADM on the PTS233. They both return to my 200 yard zero perfectly.
