Flat based bullets

How well do flat based bullets shoot in the .308 Win. Cal.? The 168 grn. HPBT in Sierra and Hornady both perform great in my Mod. 700 Rem. Varmiter but are kind of pricey. Being as the boat tail design is no advantage at short ranges I was wondering if there is an alternative for ranges out to around 300 yds. Loads that have been worked up by competitive shooters. I've also read that the boat tails sometimes do not settle down for what they are capable of when useing in the shorter ranges. Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the quick feed back. Pretty impressive shooting. Proves the flat base is up to the task out to 300 at least. I'll have to work up a load for my rifle and see if it will shoot with the boat tails. Thanks again.
