Flash hole deburring of small primer cases

I received some 6.5 Grendel brass from Robert Whitley. I noticed some of the flash holes have burrs inside of them. These flash holes are @ .058 in diameter. My flash hole deburring tool will enlarge the flash holes to @.062 if I use it.,Sinclair Tool) Should I use it or does anyone know of a tool that will not enlarge the flash holes while deburring them. I have read somewhere on here that the flash holes should not be enlarged due to effects on accuracy. Thanks, Bill

I feel that it is more important for the flash hole to be uniform in size to create consistent burn characteristics.

Hole size the same thing.

You deburr the hole to insure the shape of the burn is the same each time.

If the size of the hole is an issue with you, get a different tool.

Bill,
Call K&M and ask if they will select fit one of their flash hole tools for you. I believe Jason did that and posted about it a while back.

Thanks Guys, I talked to Ken with K & M Friday afternoon and he assured me that by using my tool I would not hurt accuracy. He agrees with halfmile completely and says that enlarging the hole to .0625 will not make any difference and that all the holes should be the same diameter.,main objective) He quoted test results of the primer flash holes being opened up to .0820 and the only changes was that a small amount of MV was lost but according to those test no other changes were noted. However, his tool has some features that he explained to me and I ordered both the small and large flash hole deburring tools from him. Thanks again guys for the comments. Bill

You may want to consider this. IMHO the length of the flash hole is more important to consistency than is it's diameter.

Ray, You are absolutely right. I always uniform primer pockets after I fire my brass once. That way I clean and cut at the same time. By the way, what does IMHO mean. Still learning here. Thanks, Bill

IMHO: in my humble opinion

IMNSHO, you may wind up feeling pretty good about reaming your flash holes to .0625". As I was reaming my 6BR brass, I found quite a bit of variation in the flash hole diameters. In some of them the reamer pretty much just dropped in the hole, that is, once it had cut off the sliver of brass that was obscuring the hole.

p.s. IMNSHO: in my not-so-humble opinion, just to throw in another one).

So what do you think of the IMG brass, Bill? I read on another forum that the flash holes were running off center--at least the batch that that particular poster had. How have you found them?

robert

Robert, Just getting back with you on that group I shot today using that IMG brass. At 100 yds. I got five shots in a cluster that measures .255 from the two most outside hole gray burnish areas of the group. After I shot this group, I shot several pop bottles filled with water at 500 and 600 yds. and after I figured out my wind hold and which dot to hold on for elevation I missed none. Yep, that's right. I'm tooting my horn. Sorry. My complete load consist of 69 gr. SMKs - 25.7 gr. of Varget - CCI BR-4 Primer. My loads are .010 from lands. This is a Rock River Arms A-4 Varminter with a 18" heavy barrel and a 4.5 X 14 X 40 Mark 4 Tacticl Mil-Dot Leupold mounted. So, at this point I have nothing bad to say about the IMG brass nor no other component of my loads. I don't think nobody's brass would have done any better.
