Fixing a Weaver T16

Guys - I have a T16, which I am planning to put on a 1970's target rifle. However - it has the mould on the inside of the objective.

The scope tracks well ( on a bright day, on a contrasty target..) so - any ideas on removing the objective? I filed a piece of brass to fit the slots in the front locking ring, but I can't budge it.

Suggestions? BTW - I'm in NZ, and moving scopes out of the country is almost impossible. The postal service has been "got at" and export licences etc etc.

Is the lock ring recessed or exposed ? If exposed I have had luck gripping the ring with a piece of inner tube (Or big rubber band) to get a grip on the ring only . I use pump pliers and very carefully just grip the rubber with slight pressure and they usually spin right off . If it's recessed I just wasted your time and I am sorry for that.

Thanks - the lock ring is recessed and has 2 slots for a tool. It was suggested by a mate that heat may be the answer and that hot water could be the solution to freeing the thing, as it may have some adhesive on the thread. Thanks for the advice on gripping the exposed ring - the next project is a Kolmorgan Bearcat 6x, which has a problem at the other end....and has an external ring.

Hi Mate,

You really need a spanner wrench to fit the slots correctly and allow some force to be used to turn that locking ring. It's a system used on other optical devices as well as riflescopes. I doubt there would be any locking agent there, it's just age. Having said that I've only ever done this on a Leupold 12x to adjust the range of the parallax and there was no locking agent on the threads. You could try and soak the threads in a release agent and leave it a couple of days to see if it migrates past the locking ring and helps loosen it and hope it doesn't get between the lens. Failing that Optical Services in New Mexico would strip and clean it for you, the guy that runs it with his daughter designed the T16 for Weaver. When I lived in NZ back in 2012 I sent a few scopes in and out without any grief, just labelled them up as telescopes on the packaging, has it got that bad you can't ship a scope to country of origin for repair?

A good source for a spanner is a socket. Find one that is the correct diameter and mill or grind down the face to leave the 2 lugs. It already has a way to turn it.

Well...legally you can ship a scope - with the appropriate export and import licences - the difficulty is the cost of shipping. NZ Post refuse to ship any firearms related items - yes - any item that they "think" may be related. So air freight is the only option - so cost of small packages. I will investigate further. I have had luck in cutting/grinding a hacksaw blade to match the inside diameter of the threads. It doesn't always work, but it's an inexpensive solution.
