Fixing a small spot on a stock

I recently acquired an Anschutz Exemplar. It has a small spot on the side of the stock. It's not that big of a deal, it is a shooter, not a wall hanger, but the spot is right in the middle of where I will look at the pistol every time I shoot it. LOL

The pic doesn't really capture it. It is more of a couple of little scratches.

I know zip about woodworking. It doesn't need to be museum quality, just pretty it up a little bit.

I assume the wood is walnut.

Thanks!

The quickest, easiest, and, in my opinion, best touch up for an amateur is to swab on some artist's linseed oil. Let it soak for a minute, buff the area gently with 0000 steel wool. Wipe it off and let it dry.

There are as many other ways to do it as there are gun tinkerers, but all are going to require some prerequisites in the woodworking category. This requires none.

If it were mine, I’d lightly sand the area with 1000, then 1500, then 2000 grit paper. Then I’d give the whole stock a coat of Arrowood oil. Get the small bottle. It’s great for refreshing the finishes on old guns and it’s easy to use.

This is the way to do it. The factory finish is very thin and if you sand it at all it will show on the factory finish. You will end up with a spot as large as you sanded that you will not be able to match unless a complete strip and refinish of the stock is done.

Really? Kinda how I did this one, with a little epoxy added:IMG_0217.pngIMG_1814.jpegIMG_1813.jpeg

Thanks. I don’t believe in the phrase “can’t fix that”.

The guy bought himself a nice Sako for his birthday and the shippers broke his stock. It just had to get fixed!
The Mesquite stock project is crawling. Wifey wanted some doors on the closet for Christmas. Finished that yesterday. She wants to give out Mesquite cutting boards for Christmas, sooo………..lots of projects going
I managed to set the pillars yesterday morning. I just pulled the action and they look ok. Time to cut for bottom metal. Wifey wants to make pies today and wants help. So it goes.

Looks like very minor damage. Steam out the dents with a wetted rag (you can use plain water or better yet an isopropyl alcohol and water mix) and hot iron. (Make sure the iron is always over wet rag else you risk singeing the wood. Then gently sand with fine wet 'n dry. Doesn't look like you'd even need to do much - if any - sanding. A few coats of BLO ("boiled linseed oil" - actually just linseed oil with driers added) and you're probably done. (Wipe on, leave for twenty minutes or so then buff off. Repeat.)
