Fix for loose primers?

I have a 6.5-284 that I need to get through one last match. My primer pockets are getting really loose and I need to limp them through one last match as well and then I'm switching cartridges. Been there done that with the 6.5-284. Anyhow, I've read about putting fingernail polish around the outer edge of the primer after it's seated. Any other tricks? My last batch of brass that got like this I ended up with some very minor pitting in one spot on my bolt. I'm using Fed. 210Ms if it matters.

The Russian primers are a tad larger diameter according to my effort to seat them. I have a 9.3x62 that had loose pockets out of the box and Wolf primers worked well. Know what you mean about the 6.5/284. Shoots great for a short while...

I appreciate the advice about switching primers. However, when I did load development, the 210Ms were a lot better. My barrel will be darn lucky to make it through next weekend's match so I don't want to waste any more shots testing. Haha, just need to skate through one more 1,000 yard match and stay somewhat competitive.

You can crimp the pockets similar to the military fairly easily if you are handy and have some tools. Just off the top of my head a leather punch would probably work, anything with a hollow center larger than the primer pocket. Works best to support the case on a rod so you can give a couple taps with a hammer upon whatever you are using to make the crimp. For emergency use, a screwdriver will work to stake the primer pocket (and / or as a case support).

Best of luck!

Ive actually set the case over a big punch that fits into the neck mounted in my vise then struck the back with a larger punch than what a military crimp looks like. Just dent it and check it. Put the primer in after this of course (disclaimer). I would only do this on their last firing. A ring die sometimes will scrunch em up the same way too but its not a guarantee

If you just need them to stay in while being transported green wicking loctite will work. A tiny drop will do.

For the next few, I'm going to save a some cases with loose pockets, and try denting them across the pocket with a chisel tip screwdriver, then repeating it at a right angle. After that, I plan to try seating a spent primer, to see if this benefits primer retention.

I've actually seen surplus 6.5 Jap cartridges which had the bullets staked at the neck. Seems neolithic, but I'm betting a lot of GI's felt no difference when they took one.

I think a company named hart makes a large and small primer pocket restoration tools. I made a similar tool for some 308 brass that I stretched out, I turned a small section of drill rod the diameter of the primer, then had a shoulder on it about .010 larger. This was mounted to the ram on my hydraulic press. I then mounted a rid on a plate and stood the cases neck down on it. Then I would swage the pockets tighter .
Also cci and wolf/ Tula primers are about .002 larger than most. Winchester primers are about .001 smaller

My main concern is no gas leakage. If I wasn't at the tail end of a barrel, the brass, and the season, I'd scrap the brass and start with new stuff. I'm re-chambering after this so I don't want to open a couple of new boxes of brass. The green Loctite sounds like another good option.

I made the tool from the referenced drawing and it worked out pretty well. I got 2 more firings on my brass before I retired it and I'm sure it would have gone more.

Try the RCBS primer pocket swager (not the bench-mounted version - but the one that screws into your 7/8" press). In addition to swaging military primer pockets, it will tighten a loose one enough for one last firing.

I bought one and it works a treat. Previously I had been using the Hart case saver which does work but the Henry Rempel nud is so much better.

I hear super glue works for just what you are wanting to do. I have some cases that I'm going to do that with. I can't confirm it, but I've heard it from what I consider a reliable source. Ymmv
