Fitting butt plate

I’d let it sit for a month before refitting that buttplate. Many people don’t realize how much wood can be removed by sanding. When I make my stocks, I use an aluminum template for my butt shape. I leave an eighth inch of wood around it, just for sanding. Starting at 120 grit and going down to 600 takes it off. It looks like that’s what happened on your stock, from the pics.
If that stock is “old”, it should have stabilized, unless you kept it in a damp basement then moved it to a much drier environment.
I recently moved from Delaware to Texas. I’ve noticed some slight shrinkage on my stocks, due to the low humidity here, but nothing like that!
