Shot my first score match of any kind today a UBR match
Never thought I would like score but I really liked the UBR format
The club adds a group target to each relay, makes it nice for us group guys

Had a great time. Oh yeah didn't even have to drive 4-5 hours to it either.
Just 20 mins up the road in Asheville they've been holding matches for two years I just found them out

Tim,

I'm glad you had a good time, and I think I know why; you cleaned up, both group and score. But that's OK...there's always next year!

As background, I started these matches here at Asheville Rifle and Pistol Club two years ago when I sort of had to 'retire' from IBS shooting due to an ongoing illness, and also to give our club members an introduction to competitive decision shooting which many of them had never experienced. So far, by all indications it's been a huge success. We've averaged about 32 guns every month in four classes, A/R, Factory, Custom and Unlimited. We shoot only one yardage each month, alternating between 100-200 yards every other month, as our range has only 12(200) or 13(100) centerfire shooting positions due to safety considerations. As we neither have nor offer any amenities, we charge only $10 for the match aggregate and award silver coins to each class' 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. In addition, we have an optional $5 group match wherein the class winners take home the cash. Sound familiar, Tim?! We are not sanctioned at this point, but that may change, and if so I'll let the group know for sure.

We can easily accommodate another 15 guns or so before we reach our limit, so pass the word and bring a friend Our matches have been on the first Saturday of every month between April and November and expect to continue the same schedule next year. If anyone has interest, please contact me at bill.buck@mac.com or 828-707-5051 and I'll include you in my notifications. Also see www.ashevillerifleandpistolclub.org.

Sanctioning with UBR...you probably already know this..is very easy and inexpensive. I hope you do sanction your matches, as it allows your regulars and those that may come to your range the benefits of record consideration and contending for points. Also, I think it's worth a lot to know that matches will be held uniformly and consistently, wherever sanctioned matches are to be held. I think sanctioning benefits everyone.

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that there are currently no membership dues for participants with UBR. The clubs are sanctioned and pay the very small membership fee. I think it's only like $25 or $30 annually and a couple of bucks per target. Either way, it's very inexpensive and new shooters don't have to pony up an annual fee to try the game.

In our area, factory and modified classes have been successful and serve to bring in new shooters that often move up in class later on. It's a good platform and has a lot to offer the clubs and the shooters. IMHO, it has more room and more potential for growth within the sport of benchrest, than all other sanctioning bodies.

The costs are low for both the clubs and the participants. Matches are simple and easy to hold and run. There's a class for virtually any gun and skill level shooter, and it's caliber neutral. So, it's a score match that you can expect to do well in, without having to shoot a 30 cal. The format encourages testing and experimentation also. There are very few equipment rules. All classes except unlimited have a simple 13.5lb weight limit and 3" wide forearm rule. 30 cal max. --Mike
