First time bedding questions.

I have a few questions left before I do my first bedding job. I have searched the threads and internet and have taken lots of notes. However I have a few direct questions that I havent seen addressed.

When you put tape on your stock to protect the finish, when do you remove it? When the Devcon is still wet or when it is dry?

Also, when applying paste wax as a release agent, do you just glop it on? How much to you buff off after it is dry?

Thanks.

Go to the home page and read the 'Stress Free Pillar Bedding' article. There is nothing really I can add. I would leave the tape on until you pop the action out after the glue has set up.

I waite till the mud is dry to remove the tape. Once it is dry I file the mud that squished out down, flush to the stock.

I like to apply 2 to 3 coats of wax. brush the wax on, let dry, buff out and repeat.

I take the tape off after I have trimmed all the excess bedding from the inside of the stock, then remove it when I'm ready to clean up the excess from the top and bottom edges of the stock. It's good to wax the surface of the tape too. The compound that rolls out of the top and bottom of the bedded area will turn loose of the tape easier.

I rub the wax on with my fingers and get it thin enough and smooth enough that I can't see it, but I don't buff it with anything. Just work it in with my fingers and let it dry. It will make a nice tight fit to the action that way. Tight enough to make you wonder sometimes if they are stuck together. You do have to pull and spring them very very carefully until they pop, and then you still have to go slow and careful the rest of the way out.On some bedding jobs, I think you could crack a wood stock if you get too aggressive pulling the metal out of it. I always think those are the best bedding jobs.

I use Steelbed and pull the metal a little green before it can get rock hard, and trim up. Then put the metal back in with light pressure and let it cure for a couple of days. Otherwise, you have to grind or file the excess off. You can't safely cut it with a knife. It's too hard.

Just the way I do it, Tom

I take the tape of when Devcon putty is somewhat hardened but still a bit soft. Before taking the tape of I trim excess Devcon from the sides of the action. I may have one extra layer of tape on the side just for this,so there's another layer left protecting the stock).
